Catalog

In addition to encoding life, DNA is good for encoding data—the digital kind. Catalog is a biotech company focused on solving a looming data-storage crisis: By 2025, humanity will be producing an estimated 160 zettabytes of data every year, but we currently have the capacity to store just about 12.5% of that, in energy-intensive data centers. Catalog is developing new methods for storing digital data on synthetic strands of DNA, which is 1 million times more information-dense than silicon. The company, founded in 2016, hopes to launch industrial-scale commercial storage services in the next few years. It announced $9 million in venture funding in July 2018.
