Rental company Car2go is a subsidiary of German-based automotive giant Daimler. What started as a fleet of two-seater cars available on demand expanded this year to offer a Mercedes sedan and a Mercedes SUV. The move is a long-term business strategy for Daimler (much like that of GM with Maven and BMW with ReachNow), putting it in a position to monetize people for whom car ownership is impractical. It’s also a defensive move against a widely held belief that more people are ditching their cars when moving to big cities. Daimler has also teamed up with Bosch to create road ready self-driving cars by “the start of the next decade.” Once those cars become available the company will need a place to test and deploy them, and Car2Go is poised to become the channel for its next wave of innovation.
