Byju’s is an app-based math/science education program for grades 4 through 12. In the first year after its launch, it saw 7 million downloads and 330,000 paid annual subscribers. The app helps children visualize and learn math through fun videos, animations, games, lessons, and quizzes, and supplements students' regular education and helps prep them for competitive exams. Byju’s, which is based in Bangalore, India, also helps older students study for exams (CAT, GRE, GMAT, etc.) by providing classroom and tablet courses. But perhaps its biggest achievement in 2016 was attracting students beyond India's urban centers: Almost 70% of its 3.5 million users come from outside the country’s 10 largest cities, and the app is being used in more than 1,700 towns and cities. Both the World Bank and the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative invested in BYJU’s in 2016.
