Blue Origin

Although Blue Origin owner Jeff Bezos and SpaceX’s Elon Musk have ceased their Twitter throwdowns, the companies are still in heated competition when it comes to building the best private space company on the planet. Construction is now underway on the Blue Origin’s 750,000-square-foot rocket-building facility in Florida. The company hopes to send astronauts into space by the end of 2016 and commence commercial flights in 2018—including tourist trips for aspiring astronauts aboard the New Shepherd capsule, which has 3.5-foot-high windows (the largest in space history, according to the company). But the real mission is to make reusable rockets: Since the hardware is the most expensive part of going to space, a recyclable launch vehicle would reduce the cost of missions by a factor of 100.
