As the music industry shifts more fully toward digital platforms, artists are desperate to know: How do we make money? Bandcamp, unlike most music services, actually has an answer. Since launching in 2008, Bandcamp has doled out $200 million to artists who have used the site to sell their music and merchandise. In 2016, Bandcamp saw a 20% increase in digital album sales and a 48% increase in vinyl as 2,000 indie labels joined the service. Also in 2016, the independent startup—which has been profitable since 2012—launched new tools for artists and poured more resources into editorial music curation through its Bandcamp Daily website.
