Atlantic Records

In a time of upheaval for the music industry, 70-year-old record label Atlantic Records is anything but a dinosaur. In 2008, Atlantic became the first U.S. label to make most of its revenue from digital, and it hasn’t looked back. Under CEO Craig Kallman and COO Julie Greenwald, Atlantic has invested heavily and smartly in artist development, something that’s become harder for labels to do since the market for physical albums—and many labels’ A&R budgets—began collapsing more than 15 years ago. The strategy is paying off: Atlantic, which is home to stars including Bruno Mars, Coldplay, Wiz Khalifa, Skrillex, and Ed Sheeran, saw more albums and singles certified by the RIAA than any other U.S. label in 2016, and its artists received a total of 18 Grammy nominations.
