Activision Blizzard

Activision Blizzard is the video-gaming publisher of such hit franchises as Call of Duty, World of Warcraft, and most recently Overwatch. It is also the first video-game giant to bring a pro-sports sheen to esports. For the January 2018 launch of the inaugural season of Overwatch League (tied to its namesake two-year-old video game, which has 35 million–plus players worldwide), Activision recruited NBA and NFL owners to pay a reported $20 million franchise fee and offered pro players a minimum $50,000 salary and health insurance. In July, Overwatch League’s Grand Finals were streamed worldwide, including on Twitch, China’s ZhanQi TV, and ESPN—the first time the network had aired live competitive gaming.
