Known for its classic Sofitel and Pullman properties, along with the Novotel and Ibis brands, the French hotel group AccorHotels is breaking out of the shadow cast by its larger rivals by building a portfolio of bold—and boldly differentiated—brands. In 2015, it acquired a 35% stake in the Philippe Starck-designed hotel brand Mama Shelter, with an aim to expand its buzzworthy properties around the world. In 2016, AccorHotels moved into ultra-high-end apartment rentals with its investment in Oasis Collections and acquisition of London-based Onefinestay, a concierge-style service that's in a handful of cities; AccorHotels is planning a rapid expansion. It also acquired the Fairmont Raffles Hotels International group, adding 43,000 rooms to its portfolio and three legendary luxury brands. It ended the year by investing in the Hamburg-based design hotel chain 25hours and announcing Jo&Joe, a new hotel-hostel hybrid brand that prioritizes hip, communal, residential-style public spaces. The company plans to roll out the brand to 50 locations in the next three years.
