Reverse Lock Theory

In writing about the Red Sox loss in today’s Boston Globe, Dan Shaughnessy makes a mention of “the famed ‘Reverse Lock’ theory.” I had never heard this term before and did a quick Google search, only to find little to substantiate its fame. But it does intrigue me.

Shaughnessy says the theory “holds that an obvious mismatch often results in the underdog’s pulling a stunning upset.” Anyone know about the origins of this phrase or have any insight into other examples?
