The block appears to have begun sometime in the last 24 hours and was noticed by the Guardian when it tried to send picture and video messages to Guardian employees in China. While media messages are blocked, the Guardian reports that, for now, text messages are going through just fine. There is no word from Chinese officials or WhatsApp owner Facebook about why the block has been put in place, but the Guardian notes that the country’s upcoming twice-a-decade leadership shuffle may have something to do with it.
