New data from LinkedIn shows that 20% of 9,600 professionals surveyed reporting holding a full-time job while freelancing on the side.

Extra money is the primary driver, especially for the nearly half of respondents who live in states such as Texas, California, and New York, where the cost of living is high. Expanding a professional network is also a factor as more millennials look to establish their expertise before moving on to work independently full-time.
