White House offers college aid to inmates for first time in decades

Up to 12,000 prison inmates will be able to use federal Pell Grants to help pay for college classes under an experimental pilot program, called “Second Chance Pell,” Politico reports.

Inmates were blocked from receiving the grants under a 1994 law, but there’s a provision letting officials conduct experiments that the White House is using to launch the pilot over objections from some Republicans in Congress.SM
