DARPA plans sound-powered undersea GPS

Submarines can’t pick up GPS signals under the sea, so the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency is working on a sound-based alternative called Posydon that would use “long-range acoustic sources” instead of orbiting satellites, Engadget reports.

The system could be ready for underwater trials as soon as 2018, though it will be initially limited to military and other government use, according to Engadget.SM
