Martian dust devil spins close to Opportunity rover

NASA’s Opportunity rover snapped this eerie photo of a Martian dust devil late last month:

The spinning column of air appeared on the north-facing slope of “Knudsen Ridge.” Opportunity has been operating on Mars since 2004; at the time it launched, scientists expected the rover to remain functional for just 90 days. NASA credits Opportunity’s longevity in part to the strong Martian winds that blow dust off the rover’s solar panels.
