“Bastille Day/Liberty Festival at Brasserie Les Halles in Washington, D.C. It was, perhaps, the only place in Washington, D.C. that celebrated Bastille Day in a big way,” said photographer Elvert Barnes. “Events included a summer fashion show and a cigar-smoking contest whereby the participants competed to see whose cigar could hold the longest ashes, as was captured in this photo of a waitress dressed as Marie Antoinette.”
