Ambassador Timothy L. Towell

A career diplomat and foreign policy expert, Timothy L. Towell has spent nearly 40 years in the highest levels of government and foreign relations. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, Timothy L. Towell demonstrated his academic potential after gaining admission to Yale University following graduation from high school. While at Yale, Timothy L. Towell pursued studies in a variety of disciplines and ultimately declared his major in Political Science. In 1957, Timothy L. Towell graduated from Yale with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science and soon found an entry-level position at the First National City Bank of New York (now Citibank). After two years in this role, Timothy L. Towell returned to Ohio to serve as an aide to Governor C. William O’Neill, marking his initial foray into the American political system.
A member of the United States Army in 1959, Timothy L. Towell spent six months on active duty before becoming a teacher and administrator at the Cleveland-based Hawken School. During this time, Timothy L. Towell also began graduate studies in European History at Case Western Reserve University. Earning his Master of Arts degree in 1962, Timothy L. Towell continued his career in education as a History and English Teacher at the Groton School in Groton, Massachusetts.
Beginning in 1963, Timothy L. Towell would spend 30 years in various official capacities for the U.S. Government, including embassy and consul work in Spain, Paraguay, Bolivia, Brazil, Belgium, and Cuba. From 1980 to 1983, Timothy L. Towell served as Legislative Management Officer in the Office of Congressional Relations for the U.S. Department of State. Following this period, Timothy L. Towell spent five years as Deputy Chief of Protocol of the U.S., in which he focused his attention on matters of diplomatic protocol. Under President George H. W. Bush, Timothy L. Towell gained appointment as U.S. Ambassador to Paraguay and later became Director for Africa in the Peace Corps. Since then, Timothy L. Towell has held a variety of positions in the private, nonprofit, and educational sectors and currently runs The Foreign Policy Group in Washington, D.C.
