Raised in the Denver, Colorado, metropolitan region, politician and social activist Michael Garcia attended Aurora Central High School until 1992. Upon graduation, Michael Garcia enrolled at the University of Colorado at Boulder, where he majored in political science. Receiving a B.A. in 1996, Michael Garcia went on to graduate studies at the University of Arizona. While still a grad student, Michael Garcia gained his first formal teaching experience as recitation leader and assistant for courses such as “American National Government,” “State and Local Government,” and “Politics of Minority Groups.” Michael Garcia also became a graduate fellow through the American Political Science Association (APSA) during this time. After earning an M.A. in political science in 1998, Michael Garcia merited a fellowship from the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute (CHCI) to intern under Solomon P. Ortiz in the U.S. House of Representatives. From 1998 to 2000, Michael Garcia worked in Washington, D.C., assisting Solomon P. Ortiz in various legislative duties representing the 27th Congressional district of Texas. Michael Garcia handled a wide range of responsibilities in this internship, including research and analysis of domestic policy issues, correspondence between legislators and staffers, and recommendations on voting and appropriate courses of action. After his congressional internship, Michael Garcia split his time between academia and public affairs, returning to the University of Arizona to teach “Politics of the Mexican American Community” in 2000. During this period, Michael Garcia began his political career in earnest, running for District 42 in the Colorado House of Representatives. First elected in November of 2000, Michael Garcia won reelection three more times in 2002, 2004, and 2006. While in office, Michael Garcia developed and taught classes at the University of Colorado at Boulder. Michael Garcia served as instructor in a variety of subjects, leading courses titled “Multi-Cultural Leadership,” “Using Democracy as a Tool for Positive Social Change,” and “Using the Electoral Process as a Tool for Positive Social Change.” Garcia has also delivered papers and presentations at the Southwestern Social Science Association Conference and the Break Away National Conference. Michael Garcia lives in Aurora, Colorado.
