Marc Garlasco, an expert in defense, disarmament, and international security, has worked with private and government defense organizations on project sites across Europe and in the Near and Middle East. After a series of prestigious appointments with the Defense Intelligence Agency, Marc Garlasco joined Human Rights Watch in April 2003.

Initially employed as a Senior Military Analyst, Marc Garlasco was involved in highly public, international monitoring work at Human Rights Watch, the largest humanitarian organization in the United States with operations across the globe. Marc Garlasco contributed to the organization's mandate of independent country and conflict analysis. The goal of this work is to assist policymakers of countries involved in conflicts, enabling them to make informed decisions in the best interests of the people affected.

While employed at Human Rights Watch, Marc Garlasco led field research teams during stability, combat, and peacekeeping operations. Marc Garlasco also played an important role in negotiations at the Convention of Cluster Munitions, providing evidence and briefings based on his field research. In addition, Marc Garlasco mediated talks with warring parties, and he analyzed conflicts based on international law.

Frequently called upon to speak about his work at Human Rights Watch, Marc Garlasco has been praised via television, radio, and print. Marc Garlasco's media appearances include the BBC, CBS, CNN, NPR, The New York Times, and several other major American and international news organizations.

Marc Garlasco's duties at Human Rights Watch also included liaising with senior American politicians. Marc Garlasco assisted Senator McCain in passing detainee treatment legislation, and he played a role in Senator Leahy's program to mitigate collateral damage caused by American military operations.

A survivor of the September 11, 2001 attack on the Pentagon, Marc Garlasco has received the Meritorious Unit Citation award from the Central Intelligence Agency. In addition to working in human rights professionally, Marc Garlasco has volunteered with a number of humanitarian organizations.
