Sony, Microsoft Motion Controls Will Beat Wii at Its Own Game

Nintendo Wii's role as king of motion gaming consoles is at risk. Sony and Microsoft have both previewed motion control systems at the E3 video game expo, and both systems knock Wii clean off the throne--even though neither has announced when their controllers will become available to the public.

Sony unveiled the PSP Go, a motion controller, and a slew of impressive titles--including a new one from Rockstar, creators of the Grand Theft Auto franchise--during today's E3 video game expo. While Nintendo, maker of the leading Wii console, failed to generate much enthusiasm at its press conference.

Seriously fueling the rumors we reported earlier, new information has popped up online saying that Sony will demo a revised PlayStation Portable (PSP) at the annual E3 gaming expo. A slimmed-down PS3--which is the more exciting announcement--will follow later.

Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3)

A few years ago, E3 made a mistake. It went invitation-only, lost the hot booth babes dressed as Lara Croft and Jill Valentine, and killed the buzz. Now E3 is once again open to the public -- or "qualified computer- and video-game-industry audiences," at least. More than 40,000 people are expected to attend the world's best gaming expo this year, which will feature early looks at releases for the upcoming holiday season.

Final Fantasy Finally Released on Xbox 360

E3, the biggest annual week-long gaming conference on Earth, kicked off on Monday, July 14 in Los Angeles. On the minds of many was the next installment of the Final Fantasy franchise, as many bloggers and fans expected some sort of announcement from Square Enix at the gamer extravaganza. Right now, all that fans (like myself) have are a handful of freeze frame images and a trailer.

Every summer at the E3 videogame event the big 3 platform holders have press conferences to try to capture the attention of gaming journalism, mainstream media, and the public. How did they fare this year? All three conferences held few surprises, but there were a few stand-out moments.
