Most People Use the Web to Talk to People Nearby

Ever use email to talk to the person sitting one office down? You're not alone. Most people use the Web to talking to people within their own city, not far-flung contacts, according to a new study by the Hebrew University in Jerusalem.

The study says that while the Web has developed a reputation as a tool for geo-commerce and penpalling, the main utility has been to increase communications hyper-locally. In fact, the abstract says, "the volume of electronic communications is inversely proportional to geographic distance."

According to the CDC, the average American gamer has a higher body mass index than his peers, and also tends to be more reliant on the Internet.

Indian Solar Lamp Great for India's Students, With One Catch

Solar power seems to be a simple and brilliant solution for the power needs of those in developing nations--it doesn't eat fuel, avoids the problems of janky power grids, and it's convenient. Hence the invention of the Studylite solar lamp, aimed at helping students, and others, in India.

Competence of the Human Resource Profession

I just read about the results of an interesting new study, “State of the Global Talent Nation”, conducted by Softscape. 94% of the 250 human resource professionals surveyed say they “don’t feel their personnel are adequately prepared to meet future company goals”. And that is 30 percent worse than three years ago. What’s even more disturbing? More than half of them say the big reason this is so is they are not confident that their business effectively manages human resource processes.
