That Jacket Was Once A Plastic Bottle: Aquafina/Sam's Club in Support of Recycling

In keeping with the holiday spirit, bottled water manufacturer Aquafina, along with retail chain Sam's Club has handed out 25,000 fleece jackets to 100 schools.

At first glance, the news is just another instance of corporate philanthropy – laudable but nothing to really bat an eyelid at. What's interesting about the effort: the jackets are actually made out of 189 million recycled bottles.

Live From PSFK Salon: Virtual Reality Has Arrived

Only, instead it being some kind of sci-fi-3D-style headgear, virtual reality has come to life in the form of technologies like Wii, Guitar Hero, and (arguably) the iPhone.

Can the words ethics and financial industry coexist?

In the midst of scandals in the financial industry, there is much emphasis on ethics compliance and the need for companies to ensure they have lobbying disclosures as well as trained personnel to monitor, review, and track covered activities. Even Congress has passed ethics reform bills and states are expanding efforts to regulate gifts. More and more companies are creating ethics panels where stockholders can voice concern about rules or practices with which they have concern.

Why Volunteers Don’t Come Back

Nonprofits tend to see volunteers as necessary, but not strategic. Attitudes towards volunteerism are simplistic and out of date. The result? A loss of 1.9 billion hours of labor year to year. Corporate Volunteer programs can remedy all that.

"I'm Bored...
Who Gets "It"? The Alliance For Climate Protection Doesn’t

I like looking at logos. The good and the not so good, and trying to discern how they were conceived, the strategic thought process that went into developing the strategy, and then into the design itself.

But a few months ago I read in Brandweek the convoluted psychobabble about the genesis of the we/me logo for The Alliance for Climate Protection and was left with the feeling that the people who contributed to the article have a relationship with mirrors that is unhealthy.

Planned Obsolescence

Is the process of a product becoming obsolete and/or non-functional after a certain period or amount of use in a way that is planned or designed by the manufacturer.
The first purpose of planned obsolescence is to hide the real cost per use from the consumer, and charges a higher price than they would otherwise be willing to pay. The second purpose has potential benefits for a producer because the product fails and the consumer is under pressure to purchase again. In my opinion this is not an ethical business practice. What do you think??

Bribery

Companies should always respect the law in the country they are operating in. So in Saudi Arabia women faces severe discrimination in many aspects of their lives, including education, employment and the justice system and they are clearly regarded inferior to men. So American companies cannot treat women like they should because of the strict Islamic laws in Saudi Arabia. By doing that, these companies are violating their corporate social responsibility and American laws. If this the case then should American companies not use bribery as a business practice in Nigeria????

Another Credit Crunch

Retailers who had been bracing for weak sales this holiday season were pleasantly surprised on Black Friday, as retail sales rose 3 percent to $10.6 billion nationally according to MarketWatch.

In the midst of the current recession and credit crunch, financial markets and lending institutions are pinching their pennies, but retailers have been slashing prices and offering strong incentives to lure consumers into their stores. So far it’s been working, but one has to wonder where the money is coming from.

Carey Business School Leadership Ethics Discussion Group
