We love technology here at Fast Company. And we're big on design too. Which is partly what makes RED's digital cameras quite so awesome, since they mix the two exquisitely. And the newly official RED Scarlet may even change the DSLR game too.

Will HDTVs Be Intel Atom-Powered?

We're all familiar with Intel's tiny, low-power Atom CPU--without it the netbook revolution probably wouldn't have happened. But Intel has just pulled the covers off its next-gen Atom system on a chip, and it has a new target device: Your TV.

This is about as sweet an about-face as you'll see in business: Toshiba, proponent of the failed HD video disc format HD-DVD, is due to swallow its pride and release a Blu-ray machine later this year. It's fabulous news for consumers.

Why You Should Be Excited About HDMI 1.4

Peep behind your HDTV and you'll find at least one HDMI cable. It's the wire that lets your HD cable box or DVD player to connect with your TV screen, and it conforms to existing HDMI 1.3 standards. That means it's limited in a number of ways... which is why HDMI 1.4 is on the way.

Today semiconductor Amimon announced its new WHDI 2.0 chipset, that will enable compatible hardware to transmit 1080p video 100 feet around your home. At the same time, research by In-Stat suggests that the technology will be beaten by standard 802.11 N Wi-Fi.

Samsung's New HDTVs Are Model Skinny and Widget Powered

HDTVs have become so commonplace, retailers such as Best Buy think they're necessities and not luxuries. For consumer-electronics companies to distinguish themselves in the marketplace, they need novelty. To that end, look at what Samsung's doing with its latest batch of televisions. The new Series 7 sets are being sold with two key features: They're ultra-thin thanks to some clever lighting designs, and they'll come with on-screen Net-connected widgets.

Sony Claims Victory in Skinniest LCD TV War, and Competitors Wonder Why

Sony says its new Bravia ZX1 is the world's thinnest LCD TV at 9.9mm. Certainly Samsung and JVC, each with 7mm-deep offerings, take issue with that.
LG Adds Photo-Frame Tech To TVs

Given that an LCD TV is basically a large digital photo frame with added video-processing power, this innovation from LG has taken a surprising while. And LG's new 47-inch "Digital Photo TV" goes one stage further than just acting as a dumb photo display: it manages to show photos while it's actually in standby mode.

Battle Of The Thinnest TVs At CES 2009

When news of LG's LH95 "thinnest" LCD TV hit last week, we should've predicted that it was just the first of a series of similar product announcements. At CES 2009, it seems that TV makers are trying to out-do one another with debuts of the skinniest/lightest LCD HDTVs.

Mitsubishi Planning Ultra-Thin Wireless HDTV

Several TV companies have figured out that they can decrease the thickness of their HDTVs by removing the bulky guts -- tuner, power supply, etc. -- and relocating them in a small box tethered to the set by a wire. This, of course, isn't an ideal solution; the minimalist pleasure of having a super-thin TV is quickly foiled by the bundle of wires crawling up your wall to get to it, and adding a big stupid box doesn't help.

JVC Introduces Super-Slim LCD TVs

Earlier this year, TV aficionados were greeted with rumors that JVC [NYSE:MC] had figured out a way to make super-slim HDTVs, and this week the company made good on those whispers. The first two LCDs to get the slim treatment are the 42-inch LT-421L89 and the 46-inch LT-46SL89, which are only 3 inches at their thickest point and each include TV tuners inside the enclosure. That's not a technical feat in and of itself, unless you compare the new JVCs to their rivals, the slightly skinnier Sharp Aquos TVs, which house their tuner electronics in a separate box tethered to the set.

Philips Announces New Crop of HDTVs

In New York today, electronics maker Philips [NYSE: PHG] announced a slew of new HDTVs, filling out its 5000, 7000 and “Eco” series of LCD sets. The 5000 series lineup includes 32-, 42-, 47- and 52-inch sizes, starting at a reasonable $799 and topping out at $2,899. Each member of the 5000 lineup comes with the glossy black casing that is so in vogue these days, and all also feature HDMI 1.3a inputs. The 7000 series, aka “Ultimate TVs,” as Philips calls the line, earns some high-end cred by offering up to 120Hz refresh rate, and uses the company's ClearLCD/PixelPerfect HD technology.
