Android Gaining Ground in Mobile Browsing Wars

Though Apple's iPhone still rules the mobile browsing game, it looks like Google's Android OS--spread over numerous devices now--is beginning to catch up. Admob's stats show its actually overtaken RIM to steal second place.

Undead Tech: the Wrist-Mounted Cell Phone

Glamour shots of this concept cell-phone wristwatch have been bouncing between design blogs, and Samsung announced recently that it would release a real-life analog in Europe by the fourth quarter of this year. But the wrist-mounted communications device has real roots--and I'm not talking about Dick Tracy.

Could Android Mop-Up the Entry Level Smartphone Market?

With news that LG's first Android smartphone is a pretty basic gizmo, and recalling the recent debut of the Motorola Cliq, an interesting thought's just occurred: Could the upstart Google OS corner the whole entry-level-smartphone market?

Is Motorola's Android Phone for Kids?

Today Motorola released its first Android device: the Cliq for T-Mobile. And while most Android comparisons run right to the iPhone, this thing looks more poised to steal teen approval from the Sidekick.

Microsoft Building One-Mile Wi-Fi

Despite protestations from the Bush administration, the FCC succeeded last year in making a certain chunk of the nation's TV and radio spectrum--dubbed "white space"--available to unlicensed broadcasters. That meant that companies could begin developing super Wi-Fi devices that create networks at a distance of miles, instead of the 50+ feet we're used to today. The dream, nationwide wireless Internet access, was within reach.

Motorola to Inject Life Into Android, With Developer Program

It's becoming clear--the future of the smartphone is intimately tied with app development, and that's something Motorola knows. A while back, I was standing in a checkout line at a drug store, passing the time by wondering who would ever buy the ugliest clock I'd ever seen, on display at the front of the store. It wasn't a regular sort of ugly. It was nuclear ugly.

Apple's iPhone isn't the only one with applications. Here are great apps for the BlackBerry, Android, and other smartphones.

BeamSuite ($49.99)
Get this app to access PDF, Office, and RTF docs, and stop grousing about the clunkiness of email attachments on the BlackBerry.

Boost Mobile's Streetfight for Prepaid Dominance

In January, Boost Mobile began offering a flat-fee $50 wireless plan for unlimited minutes, texting, Internet, and push-to-talk. Consumers flocked: the little division of Sprint added almost 700,000 subscribers in Q1, after a net loss of customers just one quarter prior. When Sprint announced Q1 earnings on May 4th, Boost's surge in sales was the only thing stemming its parent's massive losses.

It should come as no surprise to smartphone users, but a customer satisfaction survey recently performed by JD Power has smartphones scoring higher than their limited-tech dumbphone siblings. And, of course, Apple's cellphone is the one users like the most.

The iTunes App Store is the absolute king of the smartphone applications world. Not only has the billionth app just been downloaded, but a recent survey shows that smartphone users who don't own an iPhone simply don't download apps.

Green Products Expo 2009: Our Fantastic Four

Walking into yesterday’s Green Products Expo was akin to watching an episode of “Lost”: You know everything’s supposed to serve a higher purpose, but when you’re initially exposed, a lot of it just seems…awesomely weird. There were dinner plates made from fallen leaves; pillows made from plastic bottles; and even seed-lined drink coasters that, if dropped in a backyard, would blossom into marigolds.
Beauty is Better Than Brains

It's no wonder Detroit's Big Three are failing; we hold them to a very high standard. We want cars that look good and function well, and why shouldn't we? We spend a lot of money on them, and use them constantly. But what about the other invaluable products in our lives -- our gadgets?

Think of the Motorola Sparrow as an iPhone for retailers. Equipped with a touch-sensitive back panel that keeps the screen free for viewing, the wireless prototype device integrates myriad existing technologies and features into a single palm-held powerhouse. Need to check inventory? A built-in bar-code scanner can retrieve that information. Want to see a customer's profile? The Sparrow can pull one up after detecting a loyalty card or other relevant RFID tag. Ebay to Ban Ivory Sales

According to the Associated Press, eBay plans to ban the sale of ivory products in an effort to protect elephants in Africa and Asia that are being illegally poached. Starting in December, listings containing ivory items will be illegal to list, and eBay says it plans to begin to police its listing to enforce the restriction starting in January 2009.

Sprint Launches WiMax in Baltimore

It's been a long time coming, but Sprint Nextel [S] finally flipped the switch on its long-delayed WiMax hotspot in Baltimore today, as well as revealing its first WiMax devices, made by ZyXEL [TPE:2391] and Samsung [SEO:005930]. This represents the official launch of their high-speed mobile broadband XOHM service.

So far, so good. Testers reporting for the Baltimore Sun have reported driving around the city in vans with laptops and watching streaming video at six megabits per second, which is comparable to most hard-wired broadband services.

Motorola Announces Hideous "Jewel" Phone

Motorola [NYSE:MOT] apparently feels that the pre-teen mobile phone market isn't being properly exploited, and has reacted in kind by releasing the MOTOJEWEL flip phone. Aside from the fact that this device has all together too many vowels for a Moto phone (Razr, Pebl, Rokr, etc.), it also has a "crystal-cut" plastic exterior and a translucent purple keyboard that makes it look like something you get out of one of those gumball-type dispensers at the mall.

Motorola's Do-Or-Die Phone Leaked

It's well known within the wireless industry that Motorola [NYSE:MOT] is perhaps on its last leg; with an abysmal balance sheet and few consumer successes of late, company board has given themsevles an ultimatum. If their next big product release isn't a hit, they've decided to put Moto up for sale.
