Rock Band for iPhone Launches to Thunderous Applause

Living room rock gods, take note: the battle of the bands is on, and this time the arena is portable. Electronic Arts, MTV Games, and Harmonix have finally launched Rock Band for the iPhone, challenging Tapulous's monopoly in the "rhythm music" space currently cornered by the popular Tap Tap Revenge series.

From Guitar Hero to The Beatles: Music Games at War

The first half of the year was not kind to the makers of music games, according to Anita Frazier of research firm NPD Group. "Of all genres, the music/dance genre has suffered the greatest declines this year, with nearly $390 million less revenues than the
same time period last year." Shrinking sales mean that the publishers of these two franchises will have to fight hard for market share.

"We had to create these 3-D avatars that to the world say the Beatles," says Harmonix creative director Josh Randall, who led the team that produced the new game The Beatles: Rock Band. "We were like, we cannot screw this up." To get it right, Harmonix didn't ask just anybody for help -- it called the world's foremost Fab Four experts: the Beatles and their families.

Flixwagon is a mobile-to-Web video platform that, over one August weekend, delivered 6 million video streams of the Jonas Brothers live.

The new Virtual Lower East Side is like Second Life, but set in New York's gritty music scene.

The print hipsters at Vice magazine create original Web videos for MTV.

Hustle & Flow director Craig Brewer is producing $5 Cover, a digitally distributed music show.

While those of us in the States were stocking up on chips, charcoal and frozen meat last week, Nintendo (TYO: 7974) quietly confirmed that it will begin shipping its Nintendo DS handhelds in three colors in its European market: red, turquoise and green.
