Tech Retailers Add No Value

When was the last time you saw an actual mobile phone on display in a mobile phone store?

If you've had the misfortune to wander into one of these places recently you will notice that the walls and shelves of these places are usually covered with "dummy" phones, empty shells in which the screen has been replaced by a sticker. Who could possibly think that a dead lump of plastic riveted to the wall gives an impression of the real thing?

5 Trust Agents Who Are Changing the Face of Twitter

They aren't in marketing, or in sales (although they do both simultaneously). They have a strong streak of digital intelligence, and their knack for creating conversations puts them far beyond the stereotypical techno-geek. Meet your neighborhood social media professionals, they're using the Web to not only put human faces on corporations and politicians, but also to defend their honor when something goes awry.

Sony, high-tech electronics giant, has just announced a partnership with Best Buy, U.S. retail giant, to produce a whole new audio product line. It sounds like an unusual pairing, but it looks like it's borne some pretty interesting fruit.

Good news: these investments will pay off with more than just karma points, according to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).

EPEAT-for-TV: A New Environmental Standard for TVs

With so many different TV options available--plasma, LED, and OLED in the near future--it's becoming increasingly difficult to sort out energy efficiency and environmental claims. A new standard, tentatively dubbed EPEAT-for-TV, aims to change that by defining environmental performance once and for all.

It’s Almost Summer - Time To Shed Your Skin

In 2005 Ryan Dienst and his team were coming to a painful realization. The medical imaging device company they founded three years ago was in the wrong business. Global Medical Imaging (GMI) had built up a healthy revenue stream selling ultrasound and imaging equipment to doctors’ offices, but every sale was to a new customer (no recurring revenue) and margins were uninspiring.

Palm Pre Might Be A Best Buy Exclusive

We got a little excited about the Palm Pre smartphone the other day, with its great specs and surprisingly neat design, and thought it might be a sign that Palm is re-inventing itself. And today there's an interesting spin on the Pre story: It might actually be a Best Buy exclusive device.

Wal-Mart To Sell iPhone 3G

After a furor of speculation this weekend that Wal-Mart [WMT] might be the next retailer to carry Apple's [AAPL] iPhone 3G, a few details have finally emerged. According to Bloomberg, the world's largest retailer will begin stocking Apple's 8GB model at the end of December, and selling it for $197 with a two-year AT&T [T] contract.

How to Talk With Your Customers Differently

Almost a year ago, I wrote about how Best Buy handled a situation that could have snowballed in much more than an embarrassment - it could have become a PR nightmare.

Yes, customers today have a wider reach than they ever had. The experience they have of your company or store will have repercussions. The best way to make sure that experience is positive, is to have a culture that rewards and encourages those who provide one for your customers.

Business Travel Gets an Upgrade at the Airport

Fiona Morrison, 46, leads a team that has helped develop the passenger-experience elements of T5, JetBlue’s new $743 million terminal at JFK which opened October 1.

"The airport should deliver as much of an experience as the flight itself. There are a million little touches that we've sprinkled throughout T5. We chose Italian furniture that's both sturdy and beautiful; we used indirect lighting and installed colorful, custom-design carpeting. If a space looks like a food court, people will treat it like one," says Morrison.

Best Buy Begins Pilot Recycling Program

Best Buy [NYSE: BBY] has announced that it will expand its existing recycling programs in 117 of its stores, with the potential for a nationwide expansion to all 900+ stores if the new pilot program goes "sucessfully," according to the company. To date, Best Buy stores gladly accept mobile phones, ink cartridges, batteries and other items for recycling, but the yellow-rag retailer is looking to become the go-to place for free recycling of bigger electronics as well -- even if the items weren't bought at Best Buy.
