Social Media as Time Transporter

Thirty-one years ago, the housemate with whom I’d found an apartment
moved out, and I invited a poet friend of mine to take his place. We
shared that apartment for several months, until he, too, moved on, and
another friend moved in.

Last weekend, I went to see that poet friend for the first time since
around 1980. We’d been completely out of touch–but about a year ago, a
mutual friend tracked my wife down on Facebook. Turns out that mutual
friend also convinced my old housemate to join Facebook, where we found
each other a month or so ago.

Laptops for Kids and Shared Village-wide Cell Phones can Fight Systemic Deep Poverty

Horace Mann, founding President of Antioch College, famously said "Be ashamed to die until you have won one victory for humanity." Neither Nicholas Negroponte nor Iqbal Quadir will ever have to worry about shaming themselves in front of Horace Mann's ghost.

These two M.I.T. professors have both made substantial contributions in developing countries, bringing life-changing technology to villages that don't even have electricity or running water.

When Social Media Trashes You...How Should You Respond?

I just read a very interesting article called "How to Weather a Twitterstorm"--and one of the most interesting parts was the comments, which included a whole lot of people who basically said that Twitter, Facebook and other social media are a marginal part of the overall audience, and kowtowing to them is a mistake.

When Does Paying Referral Commissions Raise Ethics Questions?

At LinkedIn, a great discussion on when it is or isn't OK to pay referral fees. I don't believe you have to be a member to see the conversation though you do if you want to make a comment (might have to join the group first, I don't know).

Madoff Scam May Be Worse Than Enron: Two Things You Can Do

Some experts say the Madoff meltdown will be worse than Enron.

Are you as sick and tired of this as I am? Enron fell apart in 2001. Michael Milken was indicted in 1989--that's almost 20 years ago! And now we find out that Bernard Madoff, former head of NASDAQ, took the whole financial system for an astonishing $50 billion, suckering investors in with the promise of outrageously good yields--the same week we find out Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich actually had the chutzpah to try to sell Obama's vacant Senate seat.

What the Election Taught Us About Leadership and Marketing

Barack Obama's historic landslide
victory provides many lessons about leadership--and about successful marketing. To name some of them:

A transformative, emotion-based, positive campaign will trump a
narrow, negative, issues-based campaign. Obama inspired hope, and gave
millions of people a voice and interest in presidential politics that
they hadn’t had before. The last two party nominees to try this were
also successful: John Kennedy and Ronald Reagan (remember “It’s morning
in America”?)

Social Responsibility

Are You Addicted To Being Addicted

This
is the third and final part of this series of posts at www.TalkingSober.com where we have been
looking at the phenomenon of becoming addicted to the idea of
being addicted .

I am suggesting this phenomenon is an
evolutionary aspect of the modern day approach to 'recovery' that some
addiction professionals and counselors create.

Innovation that Mimics Nature Can Lead to Amaaing Things

It's a big challenge to the Darwinian notion of "survival of the fittest": research shows that the species who thrive in nature are not the most competitive but the most able to take advantage of--and sometimes adapt to--opportunities.

I just learnt about this initiative this year and have submitted a project called Backyard Tree Nurseries. I'm waiting to hear whether our project made it to Top 25 projects, which will qualify it for Round 2 and possible winning of a share of $2.5mil split between top 5 winners.

Social Responsibility in Guatemala

The reason I took several weeks off from my weekly Fast Company blog was that I was traveling in Guatemala

If you'll allow me the hubris of sharing an outsider's perspective after spending just a few weeks there, I'd like to make some observations:

Buckminster Fuller Still Relevant in Today's Energy Crisis--Nukes are Not

Yeah, here we go again: gas gets expensive, and people who should know better start talking about nuclear.

If ever there was a really dumb idea, splitting atoms to generate electircity is it. This is something I know about: Back in 1974, I did a college research paper on the plusses and minuses of nuclear energy...and I discovered lots of minuses and not a single plus. My first book, co-authored with Richard Curtis and Elizabeth Hogan, was about this.

Head Firmly in the Sand: Carbon Belch Day

Need an example of head-in-the-sand behavior! June 12, I found out on the radio tonight, was Carbon Belch Day:

Proud of their antisocial tendencies, these yo-yos wanted to be as
environmentally destructive as possible that day, asking people to unleash their maximum carbon footprint in order to

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder from the Inside Out

So if you're walking down the street sometime
and you should spot some hollow ancient eyes,
don't you pass them by and stare
as if you didn't care.
Say, "Hello in there. Hello."
- Bette Midler (song and lyrics by John Prine)

You don't have to be ancient to have hollow eyes. Look anyone in the eye who has been traumatized by war, rape or a horrendous natural disaster and you will see that they are not all there.

GOP Promotes Neanderthal US Energy Policy
