What the Election Taught Us About Leadership and Marketing

Barack Obama's historic landslide
victory provides many lessons about leadership--and about successful marketing. To name some of them:

A transformative, emotion-based, positive campaign will trump a
narrow, negative, issues-based campaign. Obama inspired hope, and gave
millions of people a voice and interest in presidential politics that
they hadn’t had before. The last two party nominees to try this were
also successful: John Kennedy and Ronald Reagan (remember “It’s morning
in America”?)

Are You Addicted To Being Addicted

is the third and final part of this series of posts at www.TalkingSober.com where we have been
looking at the phenomenon of becoming addicted to the idea of
being addicted .

I am suggesting this phenomenon is an
evolutionary aspect of the modern day approach to 'recovery' that some
addiction professionals and counselors create.
Sustainability is NOT optional

There is much talk in the news about how when the economy tanks, sustainability and its consumer-focused cousin, the Green movement, are moved aside.

Social Responsibility

Innovation that Mimics Nature Can Lead to Amaaing Things

It's a big challenge to the Darwinian notion of "survival of the fittest": research shows that the species who thrive in nature are not the most competitive but the most able to take advantage of--and sometimes adapt to--opportunities.
I just learnt about this initiative this year and have submitted a project called Backyard Tree Nurseries. I'm waiting to hear whether our project made it to Top 25 projects, which will qualify it for Round 2 and possible winning of a share of $2.5mil split between top 5 winners.

Social Responsibility in Guatemala

The reason I took several weeks off from my weekly Fast Company blog was that I was traveling in Guatemala

If you'll allow me the hubris of sharing an outsider's perspective after spending just a few weeks there, I'd like to make some observations:

Social Responsibility

Buckminster Fuller Still Relevant in Today's Energy Crisis--Nukes are Not

Yeah, here we go again: gas gets expensive, and people who should know better start talking about nuclear.

If ever there was a really dumb idea, splitting atoms to generate electircity is it. This is something I know about: Back in 1974, I did a college research paper on the plusses and minuses of nuclear energy...and I discovered lots of minuses and not a single plus. My first book, co-authored with Richard Curtis and Elizabeth Hogan, was about this.

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder from the Inside Out

So if you're walking down the street sometime
and you should spot some hollow ancient eyes,
don't you pass them by and stare
	as if you didn't care.
	Say, "Hello in there. Hello."
	- Bette Midler (song and lyrics by John Prine)

You don't have to be ancient to have hollow eyes. In both cases, Democrats were unable to get the 60 votes needed to stop a Republican filibuster.

It's hard.

I have launched a sponsored initiative in our country. See http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/singaporelocalnews/view/339231/1/.html for our local news on this.

Subsequently, getting the public or even the grassroots interested is throwing up hurdles and reasons for not doing it. Sure, they may say that they will love to help out, but in reality you just have to take their public speeches with a pinch of salt.

Event in NYC on Globalization and Sustainable Development

An important issue to me is the exetension of social responsibility by corporations to include their outsourcing service providers and supply chain partners. I am part of a new non-profit organization that is focused on social and economic impacts of global sourcing, called The Global Sourcing Council - http://www.gscouncil.org

Announcing a new and innovative way to lessen our environmental impact while saving money at the same time.

I just launched my new business Myfashionswap.com. The idea of the business is simple, provide an on-line venue where ladies can get together on a national level to swap out their wardrobes for something fresh and new without having to buy new. Helping their wallets while at the same time the environment.

Monthly Calls: Possible Speakers

We're going to begin to have monthly calls featuring noted speakers. We'd love some suggestions as to whom Fast Company should invite to participate. Who are the big names in socially responsible business practices, the green movement, sustainable energy, microfinancing and other relevant topics that you'd most like the opportunity to hear and speak with?

Social Responsibility

Organizations are finding better ways to do good, above and beyond the traditional boundaries of charity. They're using the disciplines of the corporate world to tackle daunting social problems – such as achieving sustainability -- all while making a profit.

Coordinators for this group are: Karma Martell and Shel Horowitz.
