The 'When' and 'What' of Leadership

‘When’ is different from ‘What’.

‘What’ suggests a thing, an item, an object, something that may easily be defined, observed, measured. ‘When’ suggests a time, an experience, a feeling. Whereas ‘what’ may be short-lived, ‘when’ is ongoing.

Pruning dead leadership strategies

"Yesterday is gone and tomorrow is not guaranteed...so live today as
if it is the best day
of your life." Many leaders I encounter are often stuck in the
past-married to old paradigms that no longer function. Some of those
"old paradigms" may be less than 10, even 5 years old. Some traditions
are much older and much harder to uproot, kind of like ivy. On the
other hand some leaders seem to be focused on the future hoping to stay
ahead of the curve and the competition and thereby not seeing the trees
for the forest.

Leadership

Courage and Leadership

Probably few folks would argue that courage is a necessary leadership trait. Putting individual politics aside, yesterday Barack Obama embodied courage. He spoke with heart and eloquence to address boiling issues. He shared himself, his worldview, and his hopes. His courage was audible, visible and palpable.

Genderlect...The Different Ways Men and Women Speak

In the 1990s, Genderlect was a topic of discussion, made accessbile by Deborah Tannen and her book, You Just Don't Understand. Although the topic is less frequently discussed, the challenges between men and women at work still persist. Simply put, and as a broad generalization, Men report, and Women rapport. The outcome is often Men lose patience, and Women feel offended. What war stories can you share? What strategies can you share to help the genders 'communicate and connect' more effectively?

How do you spot a real leader at a glance in a pool of wannabes?

Leaders come in different shapes and sizes, backgrounds and capacities. And I believe that we are all leaders in our own rights. However, there must be criteria that define a real leader even at a glance.

Leadership

It's not just about vision and charisma. It's about getting others to follow the vision. It's about getting others to focus their own vision and charisma in the right direction. It's about staying abreast of the latest trends and developments. It's about leadership.
