Commissioner
New York, New York

Janette Sadik-Khan, 49, cut through the congested knots of Manhattan traffic with a novel concept: Close some roads to cars. Green Light for Midtown, a project launched last May, has turned lanes of Broadway in Times Square and Herald Square into pedestrian zones -- and sped up traffic.

It's true, we've doubted Twitter in the past, questioning if it would ever catch fire in the mainstream. Well, here it is: Twitter is kind of powerful. And the proof comes straight from the Great White Way.

Design at the Crossroads of the World

A new design for what was once the shabbiest show on Broadway – the discount ticket booth in Times Square – was unveiled today, and it’s a look that will razzle dazzle ‘em.

Anchored by 27 skid-resistant red steps, illuminated by glowing red LED lights, the booth will serve both as a conduit for same day discount tickets, and a place to hang out while watching the greatest show on earth: the daily mayhem that is Times Square.

Fast Talk: The Business of Broadway

"I don't want to say, ‘I told you so,’ but the show came in under budget at $2.1 million, and tickets are selling out. Our audiences are 60% black and 40% white. Seeing all these people in the audience who are new to Broadway makes all those years I’ve been working on this worth it.”

“Of course, profits in theater, even with a fund, aren't guaranteed. But investors get access to all the fun perks of the theater world, which you won’t get investing in an oil company.”

Stephen Byrd, 55, a former investment banker at Goldman Sachs and currently a partner in the private-equity firm Stonehedge Partners, spent 13 years trying to bring an all-black production of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof to Broadway.
