Dangerous Times for Big Iron

The joke about owners of sports utility vehicles being in constant readiness to invade Poland became all the more poignant last week, with reports that Russia had deployed ‘peacekeeping forces’ to Georgia. With the distant echo of Russian T90 tanks reverberating from the TV news report, I watched the familiar ritual of my neighbors, the 'Guzzlers’, as they loaded their own immense vehicle with a drinks cooler and two small children. Their destination was not the strategic Georgian port of Poti on the Black Sea but Jones Beach on the south shore of Long Island.

The America Price

Commentators have coined a term that is being hotly debated in business, political, and social settings these days - - the “China Price”.

A quick Google search shows that the China Price is variously defined as:

-	The cost to America, in terms of jobs (mostly manufacturing) and boarded-up storefronts in rust-belt towns, of cheap imports made in China where labor, land, and energy costs are far cheaper than in the US.

An Inconvenient Economy

On Friday, the price of oil jumped a record $10.75 per barrel, to more than $138, immediately sending the dollar into a freefall and causing the Dow Jones to ask for a sick-day. Meanwhile, unemployment rose at a record-setting pace in May and energy costs have continued to seek the cooler temperatures at high elevations.

Want a Holiday From Gas Taxes or Traffic?

Senators John McCain and Hilary Clinton are among many in Congress
clamoring for a gas tax “holiday” as fuel prices rise and the summer driving
season fast approaches. Never mind that they focus entirely on poor consumers
and fail to discuss the implications to businesses trying to get goods/services
to market. Is there any benefit to either group from leaving the tax alone? Or
increasing it?

$10 Gas! The National Work+Life Flex Strategy

Some experts are beginning to predict that gas prices could climb as high as $10 a gallon in the next two to three years. However, all of the solutions under consideration, such as developing alternative sources of energy, will take years to have a meaningful impact and hold no guarantees.
