The venerable Portege line, Toshiba's [OTC: TOSBF] ultra-portable notebooks, has just gotten a little more venerable. The R500, the company's well-received 12.1-inch LED-backlit laptop, has officially gotten an upgrade to a 128GB solid state hard drive. That's twice the storage of other solid state machines on the market, like the Lenovo X300 or the MacBook Air, without a commensurate price increase. The R500 is still prices at just $2,999, becoming perhaps the first practical value proposition amongst its ultra-light counterparts.

Apparently convinced that there just aren't enough vowels in the current crop of netbooks, Dell [NASDAQ: DELL] has revealed its own group of ultra-portable laptops to compete with Asus's Eee PC and Apple's MacBook Air, and they're calling the two models the "E" and the "E Slim."

Emboldened by the success of low-cost, ultra portable laptops, Dell [NASDAQ: DELL] has finally entered the market with a basic laptop for the developing world. According to the official Dell blog, this machine is “positioned... as the perfect device for the next billion internet users," and while hard specifications haven't been released, it looks from press photos to feature a sub-10-inch screen and a bright red case. In most other ways, it appears to be what Michael Dell called in his blog a “mini Inspiron.”

Asus Confirms 10-inch Eee PC Announcement

The rumor mill has been confident for quite some time that Asus [TPE:2357] would follow up its successful line of Eee PCs with even larger screen models, and the official word is in. According to Cnet UK, which got its dirt directly from a company spokesperson, a 10-inch screen version of the subnotebook will be launched on Tuesday, June 2nd at the Computex tradeshow in Taiwan.

There are plenty of ultra-mobile computers on the market, and most of them are beleaguered little gizmos: half the size of a laptop, but also half the speed, half the storage, half a keyboard, and in short, half-assed. In that light, it's nice to spend some time with a little machine that is full of real PC capability -- even if it comes at full PC price.
