Being a Rock Star Creates Balance Opportunity!

Does the term "rock star" permeate your workplace? Rock star as in someone whose work, accomplishments, mere presence, is legendary and feels like a rock star is in the room?

I have a different take, from Bob Lefsetz - he of the mercurial Lefsetz Letter:

Meet the Doctor Who Plays Both Sides in the AL Championship Series

No matter what happens in the American League Championship Series between the Boston Red Sox and Tampa Rays, Dr. James Andrews will be on the winning side - and the losing side. That's the upside/downside of having a hand in both teams' success this year.

Andrews, the Alabama orthopedist we recently dubbed “the most valuable player in sports,” is the Rays' medical director. He examines injured players, performs surgery, and advises on their rehabilitation.

James Andrews has become a hidden force in sports -- rescuing careers, changing the outcome of games, and making billions for stars and teams -- by mending the world's best athletes. Here's a list of the top money earners, and insight on how Andrews helped them get there.

How Surgery Led 12 Star Quarterbacks to Victory

Peyton Manning had knee surgery with Andrews in his last year of college. The first overall pick in the 1998 draft, Manning has earned $115 million in salary and signing bonuses with the Colts over the past ten seasons, making the Pro Bowl eight times and spearheading the Colts’ 2007 Super Bowl victory. He also appears in one out of every three TV commercials, or so it seems, making him the ninth highest-earning athlete in the world, according to Sports Illustrated.

Dr. James Andrews' All-Star Baseball Team

“Phat Albert” tore a ligament in his right elbow in 2003 but has played through the pain. After the 2007 season, he consulted with Dr. Andrews and was given three options: reconstruction, arthroscopy, or rest and “self-monitoring.” He opted for the third, stating, “If it blows out, it’s going to blow out.” So far, so good. He’s an MVP candidate this year.

Last month, the SimCity box set went on sale. It included five different versions of the popular city-building simulation game, which was first published for PCs in 1989. The Sims games were not only one of the best-selling franchises of the past two decades -- they pioneered an entire category of simulation games that require quicker problem-solving skills than trigger fingers.

Flashy and innovative, concepts offer auto designers the opportunity to let their imaginations run wild. From beginning to end, designers can spend anywhere from six months to two years bringing a concept to market. Some have already gone into production; others we can only cross our fingers about.

Home Office - Day 5

One of my pet peeves are fake personal emails--you know the ones that someone tries to make personal, but it is very obviously a mass email? I got one such email yesterday from a past colleague that has vehemently avoided contact with me for the past three months. Things like this remind me of what not to do when I'm am networking.

I'm doing it again. Staring down my big to-do list and all I can do is clean my room.
I did this in college. When I'd sit down to write a paper. I'd have to straighten up my desk, fold all my clothing, etc etc. When it was all clean, there was nothing else to do but the task at hand.

Home Office - Day 3

Only 4 days of real unemployment and I got hired part time at one of my internships. I guess it's good to have an office model to keep me in line. Periodic check-ins are what I need. When I'm left alone for too long, I boil over and don't know exactly where to start again.

Home Office - Day 2

Most people fear that they will be lazy if they work at home. I had quite a surprising reaction: I had more discipline. I think I'm acting more like a workaholic than I ever did in an office. When I was sick, I used to come to the office because I knew I wouldn't take care of myself at home. Since I don't have a 45 minute commute anymore, I just keep working until after all of my former co-workers sign out of their chat clients. On the flip side of this, I look up and it's already 3am. Where did the time go? Why didn't I get up to take a break?

Converging Multimedia

Entertainment Companies; Timewarner, Sony, ....

Cable Companies: Cox, Timewarner

Membership orgainizations: Yahoo, google

Phone Companies & Cell Phone: ATT, Motorolla, Verizon, Cox

How will this play out in the end, who will lead? The cable companies, or the Entertainment Companies? or the Internet as the medium for everything?

Its first day in stores, on April 29, Grand Theft Auto IV, the epic video game from Rockstar Games, took in $310 million in sales. That accounts for around 3.6 million copies of the game sold, according to the game company. Grand Theft Auto IV went on to sell 6 million copies the first week on shelves, totaling $500 million in worldwide sales and smashing the $300 million first week sales record set last September by Microsoft’s Halo 3.
