Barrio locked in a safe - for safe keeping!

When owner Hilda Chavez went to her safe the other morning to take out the cash drawers to open business for the day at Long Island Sound, she grinned. Not only did she pull out what she needed, her hand touched what is quickly becoming a valuable item in the Aurora and Chicago communities – a precious copy of “From the Barrio to the Board Room!” I had dropped off several copies of the book earlier in the week for an event at Long Island Sound over the weekend.

About the Challenge

Princeton University professors, ghetto and barrio middle and high school teachers, congressmen, and mayors alike are standing behind the message in “From the Barrio to the Board Room.” But there aren’t enough copies getting into the hands of those who can benefit from the message, which is why my publisher and I have created The Barrio Making a Difference Challenge: A Grassroots Movement.

Indian Trails Library Event

This Saturday at 1:20 p.m., Corey Blake and I will be discussing my book, “From the Barrio to the Board Room.” The event will take place at Indian Trails Library in Wheeling in celebration of their 50th anniversary.

March Against Violence

On September 11, I had the pleasure of leading East Aurora High’s 12th annual March Against Violence. Before the march, I spoke to the audience about From the Barrio to the Board Room and my own anti-violence message. I then introduced Jim Oberweis and announced that his foundation, the Oberweis Foundation, had donated 1,000 copies of my book to the school. The audience cheered loudly…there must have been over 300 students in attendance!
