Can "Freemium" Work? Babbel and WSJ Say No and One of Them Is Wrong

Babbel and The Wall Street Journal both turned away from the Freemium model this week. The outcome will be drastically different for each.

Babbel, a language-learning site, came out of beta today with a surprise: It will be charge between $6.65 and $11.95 per month for access, according to TechCrunch. "Freemium doesn't work for us," the startup's director told TC.

Why Charging Just a Little Can Be Smarter Than Charging Nothing at All

Google's much-anticipated desktop operating system, Chrome OS (debuting in late 2010), has one main selling point: It's free. The search company plans to give the software to computer makers in an attempt to amplify its rivalry against Microsoft. That's Google's way -- nearly everything it makes is free to users.

Wall Street Journal Charges $2 for iPhone Readers

The Wall Street Journal is set to begin charging $2 per week for iPhone readers, reports Paid Content. Rupert Murdoch said that other News Corp. properties may begin using a similar model, in which Fox shows would no longer be free on Hulu and other streaming television sites. Existing Journal subscribers will pay just $1 a week for the iPhone service.

Kindle DX: Why Size Matters

People have a lot of expectations for the new, larger-sized Kindle DX. Interesting how a shift in size / form factor can hold the fate of an entire industry (newspapers in this case) in its hand. Wow, the power of industrial design! I wish a larger screen could save the Boston Globe. But I doubt that is the case, at least not in the way people are hoping.

Could Microsoft Build a Great Phone?

Microsoft and Verizon might be conspiring to build an iPhone challenger. The two companies make an inauspicious team: sales of Microsoft's Zune media player, the likely basis for the new device, have been in freefall for months. Verizon's last big bet, the Blackberry Storm, wasn't that great.

Business Travel Tips

Must have goodies @ Business Travel...

For those who travel by plane frequently like me, there are things and gadgets that make your life on the plane much easier:

iPhone - watch video, photos, listen to music... make my 12 hour flight to Tokyo so much easeier... Oh, bring along an extra external iPhone battery; those you can plug in to the botton USB port of the iphone, it sells for about $40 but worth it.. it gives you about 3 hours of extra power to your iphone.

Most Disappointing iPhone App

Name the most useful iPhone app which is also the worst?

It is WSJ 's iphone web. WSJ : Wall Street Journal

WSJ's iphone app suppost to let you view articles and news of WSJ on your iPhone.

But
8 out of 10 times, I cannot connect to it @ Starbucks or other Wifi
places. Even if I cannot connect it, it's slow...slowww... and super
SLOW

So I gave up on WSJ . Can't they make it faster? Don't they have the IT resources or speed up their servers?

WSJ Says BOO!

With Halloween just over, the Wall Street Journal jumped out from behind a hedge fund and tried to scare the business community right out of its Brooks Brothers boxers. Like most haunted houses and scary apparitions at this time of year however, WSJ’s was as fake as a Sarah Palin mask on your next-door neighbor’s pit bull.

How Toyota is Squeezing Innovation Out of Hard Times

We’ve all got work-related stuff in a little pile waiting for that moment when we have time to stop, think and pay attention — the magazine articles to tackle, connections to pursue, ideas to expand on, skills to improve, all those things that might blossom into something great, but that are not urgent.

At Toyota, they’ve found the time to pay attention to those things. It’s called the economic downturn.

New iPhone Gets Reviewed By Big Three

With the arrival of Apple's [NASDAQ:AAPL] new iPhone 3G nigh, the big three tech reviewers of the print journalism world -- Walt Mossberg of the Wall Street Journal [NYSE:NWS.A], David Pogue of the New York Times [NYSE:NYT], and Ed Baig of USA Today -- have weighed in early on their thoughts about their test devices. Each one of these guys individually has the power to make or break entire gadget companies, so their combined advice will account for a sizable percentage of sales (or not-sales) at AT&T and Apple stores this Friday. So what'd they say?
