Book Review: Upstarts

Donna Fenn’s Upstarts is zippy tour through the Generation Y mind, and a must read for students…all of them. It handedly demonstrates that the Internet has created an economic atmosphere where individuals can achieve success with little capital, an Internet connection, and a niche market. The book reads rather quickly; I’m a slow reader and breezed through 100 pages in two sittings.

Mozilla Service Week: Volunteerism for the Gen Y Geek

Want those hours of time spent surfing Facebook to make a difference in the world? No joke, here’s your chance: Mozilla, the parent organization behind the Firefox web browser, is sponsoring a “Service Week” September 14th – 21st. There’s a whole slice of the population who lack basic technological know-how…and, desperately want assistance. Service Week is a chance to bring the wonders of the internet to everyone from Seniors who want to open an email picture of their grandchild to non-profits needing a Facebook fan page.

East versus West Coast

The United States of America is massive, and other than the 3,000 miles that divides us coast to coast, we see a lot of cultural difference between states. I personally live on the West coast but have worked extensively on the East coast. I have seen a huge cultural divide between the two coasts. No offence to anyone, but things become progressively uptight as you travel from West to East.

Are You One of the Top 10%?

This past weekend, I had an engaging conversation about the younger generation with one of my best friends who serves as an HR Manager for a major Fortune 500 company in Denver, Colorado. Are discussion began with leadership in relevance to Generation Y and quickly moved into an in-depth conversation about recruiting the Top 10% talent in the college market.

What is the Greatest Challenge Facing Generation Y?

Over the past few years, I have not only read and heard several experts talk about a variety of different things as it relates to Generation Y (those born between 1977-1994), but I have been involved with many different discussions that revolve around this emerging Generation in America. Although most of these conversations and articles about Generation Y increased my knowledge and understanding of Generation Y immensely, the one question that has been hardest for me to answer about Generation Y is, "What is the greatest challenge facing Generation Y?"

25 Ways to Bolster Your Relationship Marketing Efforts

If you’ve been following along, you know that I’m working on becoming a ‘meaningful specific’ and that the particular specific in question is relationship marketing. It certainly doesn’t stand alone and I hope to examine how it fits into the other categories this blog has traditionally showcased.

I’ll think (out-loud), experiment, and share with all of you. And you’ll no doubt help me digest all of it as we have conversations and learn with each other.

A few weeks ago, I blogged about a young woman from Bangladesh who is launching her career at a U.S. company. For today’s post, I wanted to share the perspective of some American Millennials working abroad.

Gen Y and the Presidential Election

World, meet Generation Y. If you weren't aware of them yet, you couldn't miss them on Election Day.

Barack Obama’s victory is the biggest and most inspiring example yet of the growing influence of Generation Y (born approx. 1980–2000) in the U.S. and the world.

I am convinced that the quality of our living is directly proportional to the quality of our relationships, and it is not uncommon for our relationships to suffer when we are fearful or we feel threated by another person or group of people.

Networking: Pick Up the Phone

Just the other day I read that in order to truly connect and form an authentic relationship with someone you need to reach out to people in at least three different methods, typically via email, the phone and a face-to-face meeting. [For the life of me I cannot recall where I read this, Keith’s Ferrazzi’s Never Eat Alone perhaps, so if it looks familiar point me in the right direction please.]

Do You Separate Yourself From the Clutter?

Separate yourself from the clutter. It sounds simple, yet so many companies are incapable of doing it successfully.

My favorite bar is my favorite bar because nobody goes there. I can go typically at any point during the week and have virtually no wait for a drink and my pick of where I’d like to sit. It’s a nice bar with a solid layout, good bartenders, and great music. I like that it is never crowded, but I suspect the owner feels differently.

My Favorite Blog Posts of July

Wow. The summer is flying by. My virtual internship with Seth Godin has more or less wrapped up, though I will still be helping out/participating with another Squidoo project aligned with the upcoming election, and Triiibes, which corresponds with the release of his new book in October.

Helicopter Parents on the College Campus: Strategies to Help Ease Transition Pains

I was speaking with a College Admissions Director last week. He was telling me story after story about the flood of calls from parents about everything from roommate disputes to asking for vacation time off to wanting the telephone numbers of the professors of their adult children who are getting ready to head off to college for the first time.

Recruiting Generation Y: 15 Questions You Will Most Probably Be Asked During a Gen Y Interview

As Generation Y emerges into the workforce, there are a few things you can expect to see and questions you will hear. Here are the biggies:

1) Mom and dad will be highly involved in the interview process and the annual performance review. Remember, those of us who are Baby Boomers are also called Helicopter Parents for a reason. Be ready to offer parents a tour or a private website to get questions answered.

Leadership Lessons We Can Learn From Generation Y

Over the last ten days, I have been interviewed by about a dozen or so talk show hosts…talking
about the topic of Gen Y in the workplace, and I have had a lot to talk
about and think about.

As I am going around the country, speaking about Gen Y, people are
now calling me a Gen Y Evangelist…spreading the good word about this
great generation. And, as I lay out the details about Gen Y and their amazing
skills and contributions, I seem to be met by Boomers and Gen Xers who appear to have not just a chip but a 200 pound boulder on their shoulders
about Gen Y.

You May Be a Helicopter Parent If...

I was speaking with an HR Director last week. He was at a cocktail party, and
a 23 year old young man whose father is a close friend of his walked up. The HR
Director told the young man how excited he was that he was applying to work for
his company. The young man looked puzzled. As it turns out, the 23 year old had
not applied for the job…his father had applied on his behalf. I had to say I
burst out in laughter. Later, I thought “You know…this may not be so funny.”

ROI Of Social Media For Gen Y Audiences (And How To Convince Your Boss)

Generation Y - roughly those aged 13-29 - are among the strongest
consumers and influencers. And while social media like Facebook,
delicious, and Flickr have garnered media attention, many businesses
are still wary of dipping a toe in the social media water.

How Do You Attract and Retain Generation Y? Learn From Google, Intuit and Disney

Generation Y (the young men and women born after 1977) are different
from other generations in many respects, from their political views to
the careers they choose (or don't choose). Their presence in the
workplace is truly making an impact, causing employers to worry, fret
and scratch their heads, and asking, "What do I do to attract the
20-something worker, and once I have them, how do I keep them?"

Generation Y: Stand Up For Yourself in the Workplace

Helicopter Parents: Are You Hovering Over the Workplace?

It’s that time of year. College seniors
from around the world are graduating, and they are hitting the career
world looking for a job. And the interesting thing is that most are not
doing it alone. Many parents are by their Gen Y’s side and not just for
support and to be a sounding board. If you are a helicopter parent who
is hovering over your adult child’s job hunt and interview process, you
may be hurting your child’s professional development and their chances
to land the job.
