All Beef and No Brand: McDonald's Goes Faceless to Sell Burgers in Japan

Earlier this month, McDonald's rolled out its famous quarter pounder in Japan – but to regular passersby, there was no apparent connection between the smell of burgers and the world's largest fast food chain.

Good News: The Economy Isn't the Only Thing That's Dying

Some guy in Japan just bought the farm by working too hard. You heard right. He was 45, the lead engineer for a Toyota hybrid car division. While he was helping us reduce our dependence on oil, the poor guy ran out of gas. And he didn't even live as long as some of our aging rock stars. You know the economy is in bad shape when an auto worker doesn't last as long as Keith Richards. Prior to his death this dedicated worker had been averaging over 80 hours of overtime per month. Which I guess should now be referred to as "six feet undertime."

G8 Summit

Leaders from the world's richest countries will gather again, this year in Japan, to discuss what needs to be done in response to climate change. As this will be George W. Bush's last year in office, and thus last year at the G8 Summit, it will be interesting to see what kind of mark he leaves at the conference.

Social Responsibility

Please see my Facebook or MySpace profile for more information.

I am an academic and a journalist involved with issues of social responsibility, primarily in Asia. Originally from the United States, my background there is in book publishing and community organizing in New York City. Issues I have been active with include homelessness, recycling, zoning and development, and democracy in Asia. I am deeply familiar with the history and culture of China, Japan, and India, having lived, worked, and studied there; and, broadly speaking, in Asia as well.

Japan's Quirky Vending Machines

Put some change in, thrust your face out and prepare for… a quick nicotine fix and an estimate of your wrinkles.

The Japanese have always had the world's quirkiest vending machines – actually I'd go so far as to say the world's quirkiest products in general. I did a slideshow on quirky vending machines for Fast Company last year; commonly dispensed products include toilet paper, beetles, porn and sex toys, umbrellas, fortunes, rice, and of course cigarettes and beer.
