A Problem-Solver's Guide to Copycatting

Your business has a big problem. You've thought about it, but you can't seem to crack it. So you consult your colleagues -- to no avail. Then you turn to the big guns -- your industry's top experts. They've got nothing. (Well, to be precise, they've got 40 PowerPoint slides worth of nothing, and you've got $225,000 less of something.) Now what?

How to Write a Mission Statement That Isn't Dumb

Here are four mission statements. Two are from real organizations. Two were created by Dilbert's Automatic Mission Statement Generator. Can you guess which ones are genuine?

1. It is our job to continually foster world-class infrastructures as well as to quickly create principle-centered sources to meet our customer's needs.

2. Our challenge is to assertively network economically sound methods of empowerment so that we may continually negotiate performance-based infrastructures.

3. To improve lives by mobilizing the caring power of communities.

Intel Risks It All (Again)

When Paul Otellini, Intel's famously reserved CEO first heard the news, he got quiet. "The madder I get, the quieter I get," he says, an important footnote for any Otellini user manual. He was hushed via press conference by Neelie Kroes, the European commissioner for competition. "Intel used illegal anticompetitive practices to exclude essentially its only competitor and thus reduce consumer choice in the worldwide market for x86 chips," Kroes read last May from the 542-page decision on an antitrust case charging Intel with unfair trade practices.

How an Economist's Cry for Ethical Capitalism was Heard

Noreena Hertz had to seduce Bono. The Cambridge University economist was writing a book on the developing world, and Bono's personal saga of getting the U.S. government to cancel more than $400 million of debt was just the pop-culture bridge she needed to move her ideas beyond the wonkish corridors of academia. After all, Hertz's motive for The Debt Threat -- a deep dive into the debt trap that, she argued, would have global consequences for all -- was to juice the campaign that had been building slowly in activist ranks.

Cellphonometry: Can Kids Really Learn Math From Smartphones?

In middle school, math was Taylor Scott's worst subject by far. "I honestly hated it," says Scott, now a 15-year-old sophomore at Southwest High School in Jacksonville, North Carolina. She'd take notes as the teacher droned on, but she never really wrestled to understand the concepts until she was home alone with her textbook -- and sometimes not even then. Most of the time, her math grades hovered in the B to C range.

RFD-TV: How an Ex-Farmer Built a $25 Million Media Empire for Rural America

Patrick Gottsch peers out the window of his rented private jet as it surges above the tree line. "That's our audience," says the squat, worn-faced founder of rural cable channel RFD-TV, pointing down toward the farms jigsawed together along the Iowa-Nebraska border. What people don't understand, he later adds, is that every one of those squares will generate roughly $300,000 this year.

Privatizing Gains and Socializing Losses

"Repealing Glass-Steagall was 'obnoxious' and a bipartisan 'absurdity'...

The end result of the repeal was you have 'taxpayers subsidizing risk-taking' on Wall Street...

'It's the most anti-capitalist thing I've ever heard of in my life.'

...Glass-Steagall wasn't regulation, 'it was common sense'..."

Nonsense At Work

Legally spreading illness:

Here’s a fun question for you. What is the quickest way to legally spread swine flu in the USA? You don’t know? Here’s a clue. It has to do with people you interact with every day.

The answer? Make it difficult, if not impossible, for people who already have swine flu to stay home.

Do you realize that people who interact with the public, people in the services sector, are among those millions of Americans who don’t get paid if they don’t go to work?

ou may be looking at these and think to yourself, “Yeah, seen ‘em already. So what?” But be aware, these are the the exact same colorway as the images previously seen. Chris Paul’s new signature jordan shoes takes cues from its previous model, but is formed into a profile that’s a bit more conformed to other successful Jordans. The suede medial upper contains a clever ‘CP’ coat of arms, along with the fleur-de-lis, complimenting the French culture in New Orleans.

The original touchstone was basanite. It is a smooth, black
stone used to test the quality of gold and silver. It was rubbed across the
precious metal and the authenticity could be determined by the color of the
streak produced. The word touchstone now means anything that tests

"Job Losses Could Trigger Round 2 of Banking Crisis"

"The unemployment rate now stands at 10.2%, yet stocks are at a 2009 high. The bulls will tell you not to worry; the unemployment rate is a lagging indicator. True as that may be, Charlie Gasparino author of The Sellout, has a word of warning: the jobs data may be a leading indicator when it comes to the health of our banking system.

One of Gasparino's sources, Calyon Securities banking analyst Mike Mayo (who warned of the credit bubble before the crash) tells him, if unemployment rises to 11%, 'there could be an issue where we have round 2 of this crisis.'

Why?
