What Hitoshi Abe and Qingyun Ma Are Teaching the Next Generation of American Architects

At first glance, Los Angeles might seem like the last place anyone would visit for architectural inspiration: Patchwork quilts of parking lots and strip malls alternate with vast carpets of matching faux-Mediterranean subdivisions, all knit together by a web of eight-lane freeways. But look closely and you'll see daring architecture dotting the scrubby hillsides.

After graduating from Kent State University in the fall of 2006, I took a CAD Draftsman position at Universal Brass Inc in Las Vegas in the summer of 2007. Over the past year, I have learned a lot and I believe my drawings reflect that. There is more detail and descrpitions in my drawings than before. I work mostly with detail,3D, Mechanical, Assembly, and Fabrication drawings. I have always been interested in the design field and architecture, but I think I have mostly always had a knack for drafting. My other interests are baseball, football, hiking, reading, biking and technology.

Great Design – Defined

What is good design? I asked friends and colleagues what good design is. Most of them answered naming a few products or mentioning a designer’s name. I felt that these answers were not getting to the essence of what good design is or even better, what great design is. Read below my attempt to answer this seemingly easy question.

Great designs are those that successfully balance beauty and function in the context they are going to be used.

I write about how cities change, how design makes work and society fairer, and how architecture and real estate collide. I come to this work as a native New Yorker and lapsed MBA, and I love to convey how grand ideas take new shapes as they move from one person's brain to the public realm. I live in Lower Manhattan with my wife and daughter.

Co-Create “Like You Give a Damn”

From Buenos Aires to Biloxi, architects anywhere can design emergency shelters for those who lost their homes in Sri Lanka. They may never meet in person or tour buildings they designed yet they can now see each other and their creations online. Their ability to share building designs is world-changing, especially for the poor.

Why? Because, from Mumbai to Rio and western China, by the year 2020, “one-quarter of the earth’s population will live in so-called slums.”

American Institute of Architects Convention and Design Expo

Most conventions are about talk, but the American Institute of Architects wants to "Walk the Walk." That's the theme of the campaign recently launched by the AIA to promote sustainable design, and accordingly, the AIA has greened its convention, which this year is in Boston. No more session handouts or "Hello, my name is..." name tags. Exhibitors are packing fewer samples, and leftover food is going to soup kitchens.
Amiercan Institute of Architects Convention and Design Expo

This year's AIA Convention and Design Expo in Boston (May 15-17) will explore the essential role of the architect in society.

The power of architecture on behalf of all people underlies every aspect of the convention. The "We the People" program inspires responses on many scales of interest, from the role of the architect in the world as a shaper of policy to the voice of people who might otherwise not be represented. It is a program that makes allowances for new building types, materials, and methods, as well as the interaction of what we build with the natural cycle of our planet.

Innovation

Hello,

Here is a bit of information about myself, where I've been and where I'm going.

From present to past:

At the moment, I am starting a new business offering facility management services. The name of this business is Single Point FM.

Prior to Single Point FM I was the facilities manager at Magellan's International Travel Corp. I was a one man department in a fairly small company. I was responsible for the facilities operations for 4 properties: corporate office, distribution center and two retail stores.

China Design Now

As Deng Xiaoping might have said, to get creative is glorious: First China conquered manufacturing, now it's sniffing out design. This exhibition at London's V&A Museum, on until July, showcases achievements in the country's fast-growing architecture, fashion, art, and design sectors since the late 1990s--including the Wing Shya photograph "The Soft Touch: Pearls of the Orient." While the boom might spook sensitive creative types in the West who fear the effect of cheap talent on their marketplace, V&A director Mark Jones says they shouldn't worry.

Design
