LG Camera-Phone Makes You Look Prettier

LG [LGERF.PK] looks as if it’s prepared to challenge Nokia [NOK] and Sony [SNE] for the title of most camera-capable mobile phone. First came the KC920, nicknamed the Renoir, and now a new little-brother model: the just-announced KC780.
Sprint Launches WiMax in Baltimore

It's been a long time coming, but Sprint Nextel [S] finally flipped the switch on its long-delayed WiMax hotspot in Baltimore today, as well as revealing its first WiMax devices, made by ZyXEL [TPE:2391] and Samsung [SEO:005930]. This represents the official launch of their high-speed mobile broadband XOHM service.

So far, so good. Testers reporting for the Baltimore Sun have reported driving around the city in vans with laptops and watching streaming video at six megabits per second, which is comparable to most hard-wired broadband services.

Google Patents "Wireless Connection Bidding" For Cheap Calls

According to an article on the website of New Scientist, Google [GOOG] has more telephony tricks up its sleeve besides its Android phone OS. In fact, a patent filed in 2007 was published this week that shows Google investigating "instant bid" technology for wireless connections.

Motorola Announces Hideous "Jewel" Phone

Motorola [NYSE:MOT] apparently feels that the pre-teen mobile phone market isn't being properly exploited, and has reacted in kind by releasing the MOTOJEWEL flip phone. Aside from the fact that this device has all together too many vowels for a Moto phone (Razr, Pebl, Rokr, etc.), it also has a "crystal-cut" plastic exterior and a translucent purple keyboard that makes it look like something you get out of one of those gumball-type dispensers at the mall.

Samsung Announces Eco-Phone

If you're a fan of biofuel, you'll love this: a phone made with a corn-based enclosure from Samsung [SEO:005930]. The E200 Eco phone doesn't sport any mind-blowing specs; it simply features a 1.3MP camera and MP3 player functionality along with the regular suite of phone functions. But its enclosure is molded out of a bioplastic made with corn, and when it is made available next month in Europe it will arrive in recycled packaging material.

T-Mobile Gets First 3G Phone

The other day we reported that T-Mobile [NYSE:DT] was bringing online their second 3G service market in the country, bringing the total to New York and Las Vegas. Well, now it's even got itself a real life HSDPA handset to go with the network, courtesy of Sony Ericsson [NYSE:SNE]. The phone is a little green-and-black number called the TM506, and sports the standard tri-band GSM/dual-band UMTS radios for regular and 3G connectivity. It also packs Bluetooth 2, a 2MP camera, and assisted GPS. You can buy it on September 3, but no word on what it'll cost (best guess: not much).

There's a lot of buzz about "3G" in the mobile phone world -- not least of all with the iPhone 3G from Apple [NADSAQ:AAPL]. But what exactly is 3G, and why do some phones and locales have it, and others don't?

Motorola's Do-Or-Die Phone Leaked

It's well known within the wireless industry that Motorola [NYSE:MOT] is perhaps on its last leg; with an abysmal balance sheet and few consumer successes of late, company board has given themsevles an ultimatum. If their next big product release isn't a hit, they've decided to put Moto up for sale.

Sony Ericsson Net Profits Fall 97%

Everyone in the mobile world had a hunch that this quarter would be a rough one for Sony's [NYSE:SNE] Sony Ericsson division, but it's safe to say that few people knew just how bad things were at the ailing phonemaker. According to SE's Q2 results, net sales dropped a staggering 97%, thanks in part to industry-wide lagging high-end mobile phone sales.

Today mobile phone giant Nokia [NYSE:NOK] snapped up GPS maker NAVTEQ [NYSE:NVT] for the healthy sum of $8.1 billion. Because EU regulators and Nokia shareholders had already green-lit the deal, the completion of the transaction wasn't a surprise to any, but Nokia's share price still rose thanks to the news. This deal comes on the heels of word that GPS makers TomTom and Tele Atlas had joined forces, forming another formidable GPS conglomerate.

With less than five days until Apple's [NASDAQ: AAPL] Worldwide Developers' Conference in San Fransisco, Mac fanboys are getting some exciting peaks into the coming announcements. Spy shots taken at the Moscone Center, where the event is to be held, reveal large overhead banners displaying what seems to be a rebranding of OS X as a two-headed platform: one banner reads "OS X iPhone" and the other "OS X Leopard."

T-Mobile Announces Tony Hawk Edition Sidekick

Today T-Mobile [FRA: DTE] debuted a new version of their popular Sidekick mobile device, offically called the Sidekick LX Tony Hawk Edition. The Sidekick, which is made by Sharp, has found immense popularity in younger demographics, so a Tony Hawk version -- he's the professional skateboarder with a line of successful eponymous video games -- shouldn't hurt. This Sidekick is more or less the same as the old ones, with a few notable additions. The most salient is a feature called "play and share," which goes along with the also-new video recording functionality.

New Mobile Tools

Over the past few months I have been playing with a lot of the new GPS enabled mobile apps. There has been a shift (finally) from ported applications (applications written for the web and ported to mobile) and true mobile designed applications. Some of the most popular are the Yahoo Go!, Google Maps and the new Windows Live Search for Mobile.

Which one is worth the time to install and play with? Well, here’s the breakdown.

The stage is set for a very interesting development of mobile marketing. Apple has released the iPhone and Google is backing the Android Platform.
