Should Colleges Subsidize Print News, Or Switch to Kindle?

This week Wesleyan University announced that an anonymous donor had given the school $20,000 to subsidize paper New York Times subscriptions for students for the next two years. One hundred and fifty miles away at Princeton University, students booted up their new education-model Amazon Kindles this week. Which has been the best solution?

Fwix Allows Publishers to Create Their Own Hyperlocal News Feeds

Although it’s usually doling out the headlines, hyperlocal news aggregator Fwix made some of its own this morning, announcing the launch of a new API allowing online publishers to add local news feeds to their sites and widgets. The company also secured $2.75 million in Series A funding, which should accelerate Fwix toward its goal of cracking the hyperlocal media model.

Michiko Kakutani Is Destroying The Fabric Of American Culture

Oh to sing the joys of Sunday morning with the NY Times Book Review section, where we can discover which books are going to get their second Times review. This morning the winner was E.L. Doctorow’s novelistic treatment of the hoarding Collyer brothers, a story apparently of immense import to the editors of the Times. Our first indication that Doctorow was about to get a Full Friedman wasn’t Michiko Kakutani’s review in the daily Times on August 31st. No, it was the PR-generated almost completely coincidental At Home with E.L.

The Big, Awkward Problem of YouTube Fees

YouTube has become our national trove of free video, a place where a company can find a free platform for video marketing junk and individuals can watch dogs sleepwalk. But as we've discussed before, the Web's video giant costs Google an unsustainable amount of money each year, regardless of the paltry revenue the site has earned from advertising. So the conversation continues: how does Google make YouTube profitable without killing the service we know and love?

Wikipedia and 'The New York Times' Suppress Facts to Save Kidnapped Journo

Last week, journalist David Rohde escaped after a seven-month kidnap by the Taliban. It's fabulous news, and it's been partly attributed to the fact that The New York Times suppressed it in the first place. But today we learn that Wikipedia did so too.

Exxon's Brazen Greenwashing, on the Front Page of The New York Times

Yesterday, on the bottom of it's front page, The New York Times ran the ad you see above, from ExxonMobil, which touts the idea that car emissions have fallen by 95% since 1970. Which sounds great! There's nothing at all to worry about with global warming! We're already doing such an amazing job!

Typography's Role in the Newspaper Recession

Like every other print publication, The New York Times Magazine has been lashed by rising costs and falling ad revenues. In their most recent issue, they've responded by cutting page size by 9%--meaning a trim off the top, bottom and sides, producing a somewhat smaller magazine. But they're not cutting the content. Instead, they've moved to a subtly difference typeface which allows them to fit just as many words on every page.

Seven Things to Read Now

Why is Philip Morris Backing Antismoking Bills?

On Thursday, the U.S. Senate passed legislation giving the FDA authority to regulate the tobacco industry. Just 10 years ago, when Senator John McCain introduced a similar bill, it was scuttled in part by $100 million worth of lobbying on the behalf of tobacco giant Philip Morris. But PM has backed the new bill, which implements tough new restrictions on how cigarettes can be advertised. What gives?

Who Needs AOL's Creepy "Good News" Site?

This week AOL News launched a Sears-sponsored news site that only reports good news. It's called GNN, or Good News Network. Is the world really so dark that we need our online news filtered through a Lexapro-colored lens?

The New York Times Launches Times Wire News Aggregator Feed

Today The New York Times launched an online live news aggregator. Technically speaking it's not on par with an all-Kindle digital distribution business plan, but it's actually pretty good.

Kindle DX: Why Size Matters

People have a lot of expectations for the new, larger-sized Kindle DX. Interesting how a shift in size / form factor can hold the fate of an entire industry (newspapers in this case) in its hand. Wow, the power of industrial design! I wish a larger screen could save the Boston Globe. But I doubt that is the case, at least not in the way people are hoping.

The news about the upcoming Amazon big-screen e-reader is developing fast: Just yesterday we heard it was definitely due, and there's an Amazon press conference scheduled tomorrow. But there's still time for the rumors to develop, and that's exactly what's happening.
