This past Sunday, during Fox's pregame coverage of the Dallas Cowboys game, the network teamed up with Burger King to produce this awful, unfunny cartoon:

Infographic of the Day: McDonald's Heat Wave

Just how far away can one get from the generic convenience of Starbucks, Subway, or OfficeMax at any given time? Turns out, not very. Stephen von Worley at Weather Sealed set out to chart the urban sprawl of America by mapping the 13,000+ locations of McDonald's across the lower 48 states. With the aid of Agg Data, he created a striking map of the US, colored by distance to the nearest domestic Mickey D's. Gorgeous, but terrifying.

The Gripping Statistic: How to Make Your Data Matter

Imagine that the federal government announces a second-stage bailout in the amount of 703,000 hectoshekels. (We've gone metric!) You're probably not sure how to feel about this. (Though if you're already incensed, you should probably cut down on the Fox News.)

To assess the bailout, you'd ask: How much money is that, exactly? Is it too much or not enough? (Also, in this crazy metric world, how many centiliters do I weigh? And do I look skinnier?)

Our Brains Versus Fast Food? No Contest

I know I have. A few days into a diet, we've been very good, and something snaps. I suddenly lose the ability to feel
satisfied by a grilled chicken salad, and, ignoring my guilt, reach into the
back of my freezer and open that pint of Ben & Jerry's that's been haunting
my dreams.

Little-Known Redbox Proves the Power of In-Between Technology

If you were a Hollywood casting agent and the squat, garishly decorated Redbox DVD kiosk came in to audition for a role as the newest disruptive force in the entertainment industry, you'd send the poor fellow home. This sorry contraption doesn't run peer-to-peer software; it doesn't do Blu-ray; it won't stream anything straight to your house. It's a vending machine in a supermarket -- as old school as you can get without actually involving vacuum tubes.

Special Libraries Association Conference 2009

Cara Schatz wants to make one thing clear: Members of the SLA are, in
fact, special. "They work at huge companies, like McDonald's and
General Electric, and they inform C-suite decisions," says Schatz, a
conference organizer. "They need to know the latest, greatest ways to
find information." Attendees this year will hear a keynote from Colin
Powell, discuss buzzed-about tech innovations (Twitter), and unwind at
themed mixers. Web-savvy librarians who know how to party? That really is special. --Dan Macsai

Supersizing McDonald's Eco-Cred

Bob Langert thought he knew where his life was headed. A few years after college, he took a job at a transportation and packaging company outside of Chicago that did huge business with McDonald's. He envisioned working one day in logistics or operations for McDonald's corporate headquarters. Then in the late 1980s, he was given a six-month assignment to eliminate the chlorofluorocarbons and find a way to recycle the polystyrene in the clamshell packaging that McDonald's was then using. He had no idea what CFCs and polystyrene were, but he jumped right in.

All Beef and No Brand: McDonald's Goes Faceless to Sell Burgers in Japan

Earlier this month, McDonald's rolled out its famous quarter pounder in Japan – but to regular passersby, there was no apparent connection between the smell of burgers and the world's largest fast food chain.
