Google's Digitizing Iraqi Historic Archives

Google's extending its grip on the digital world in a wholly new and surprising way: It's just brokered a deal with Iraq's authorities to digitize historic artifacts and documents in the country's museums. It's a philanthropic move, don't you know.

NATO Tweets Too [Updated]

Twitter gained a lot of credibility thanks to its use by Iranian protestors recently, and we already knew that it was useful for spreading breaking news. But did you know that NATO, the global military machine, Twitters too?

XM25 Rifle Fires Around Corners, Inside Trenches

American infantrymen could soon get a lot more fearsome in the field: The Army has just developed a rifle that will enable soldiers to attack around corners and inside trenches. The bullet itself doesn't curve--cool as that would be. Rather, it can be programmed to explode 1-to-3 meters short of or past a given target, thus allowing its shrapnel to reach a hidden enemy. (See the diagram above.)

Mining Data to Predict Attacks in Iraq

Physicist Sean Gourley thinks he may be able to model and predict violence in Iraq.

And it's not just Iraq; Gourley, who works for the San Fransisco-based startup YouNoodle, has used his military side project to map the distribution of attacks in wars in Afghanistan, Colombia and Senegal as well. His finding: the casualties in all four of those conflicts, despite the chaos, fall into a precise mathematical distribution.

I DO CARE.

Two days ago I received a FWD to my inbox that I'd received once
before, but deleted it after reading only the first two lines. This
time I read it in full.

YIKES!

A feeling of disgust that I'd deleted the FWD the first time washed
over me. Why didn't I read it and respond to the sender then? If I were
at a party and heard someone actually saying the words written in the
FWD, I would constructively and in love respond to the storyteller. So,
why did I not do that with an email?
