The Google Phone Is Coming to Change the Game

[Update: Could the Google phone be a data only, VoIP-driven device, rather than a standard phone? TechCrunch has a source that thinks so, and suggests that AT&T is already bidding to provide data services. (If you can't beat 'em, join 'em.) You can already port your phone number to Google Voice, after all. So you'd just make your calls over the data service instead.]

Twitter's Published Stolen Documents Raises Ethics Questions

"Journalists should report on what people need to know, not what people want to know" the late Walter Cronkite once said. Journalism has certainly changed since Cronkite retired. The most established newspapers in history are struggling to survive and come up with a viable financial model. Bloggers and citizen journalists are carving out niches and redefining what makes a breaking news story. The lines between blogger and journalist are blurred and as a result we have run into ethics issues.

Arrington May Launch $300 Tablet PC by End of July

According to InformationWeek, TechCrunch blogger Michael Arrington has incorporated a company in Singapore to manufacture and sell his CrunchPad Tablet device, which may be ready for imminent arrival to market. The thin, touchscreen device will have a 12-inch diagonal screen, and on-screen keyboard, and will perform all the usual netbooky functions -- email, Web browsing, video-watching courtesy of Flash -- in a smaller, thinner form factor than the market's current offerings.

Tech guru Michael Arrington made a booboo last night, accidentally leaking details of a nearly ready-for-production CrunchPad--a large, tablet PC designed for browsing his website, TechCrunch (and other Web sites, if they exist).

Rumor: Google In Talks to Buy Twitter. [Update] Or Possibly Not

Twitter's management turned down a $500 million buy-out offer from Facebook late last year, which was an interesting move for a company that made zero revenue at the time. And now the rumors are heating up that Google is in talks with the company and a possible buy-out is on the table.

Facebook Tries to Buy Twitter. Are They Insane?

There are two kinds of companies in the Valley: those that make money, and those that don't have to. As the economy worsens, the former group behaves like firms in other sectors, making cuts and revising earnings expectations. For the latter group, living in a VC-backed candyland, it's as good a time as any to spend half a billion dollars on something fun.

The popular blog on all things technology, TechCrunch, recently had a post on something you don't typically see on the blog - organic growth. The entry entitled "Does Google Have an Organic Growth Problem" - discusses an analysis by Citi equity research analyst who argues that Google's organic growth is decelerating.

Jerry Yang Hatred Reaching Hysterical Levels

It's been a few days since Microsoft reportedly walked away for good
from discussions with Yahoo, and the vitriol being hurled at Yahoo CEO
Jerry Yang is really something to behold. There certainly are facts to
back it up, but the uniformity of the conventional wisdom and the level
of anger puzzles me. Some of the coverage has taken on a very personal
tone.

You can easily picture the veins bulging as Michael Arrington at TechCrunch screams Yahoo can't possibly make more mistakes:

In the 19th century, the Bay Area saw the rise of William Randolph Hearst as a new type of media baron. Now the Silicon Valley has Michael Arrington, founder and editor of TechCrunch.
Microsoft's New Tune

Open source advocates cheered in the streets yesterday. That's because
Microsoft announced it is releasing 30,000 pages of documentation for Windows
(both desktop and server products) that were previously available to partners
through a trade secret license.

Microsoft has finally capitulated to the
open source movement by making Windows more interoperable with other software
and the Web.
