How to Create a 20/20 Business Vision and Why it Matters

At some point in his or her career, every politician gets tarred with a catch phrase--and usually not a flattering one.

George Bush, Sr. is stuck with two. There was "Read my lips, no new taxes," of course. But only slightly less unfortunate was his dismissal of what he called, "The 'vision thing.'"

He was trying at the time to shake the impression that he was a competent day-to-day manager but he lacked any grander vision of where he wanted to lead the country. His choice of words and tone of voice didn't exactly help.

Work at home programs

Many companies have moved to an at-home work model, most of them in the call center or customer service departments. The benefits are huge - positive ROI, more engaged employees, lower costs for brick'and'mortar, increase in customer satisfaction... What are your thoughts on this trend?

Six Fascinating Things Online this Week

Watch Those Fingers

Imagine you had the opportunity to meet President Obama in Prague this week. Now imagine that you had no idea who he was, and so you decided to stick your fingers in his nose and eyes. Such are the joys of being a baby, as captured in a heartening and humanizing White House photo by Pete Souza.

Leading the Way Out of this Economic -- and Ethical -- Mess

I'm looking for any sign I can find that we're in recovery -- not
only that the economy is turning around, but that the mindset that led
us into this mess is shifting.

I found a good one.

Behavior and Technology: what you intend is not always what you get!

Raju, the peon at my high-school in Mumbai growing up, lived (with a big family of 12) in a tin-roof shanty in nearby Dharavi, the world's largest slum. Electricity was scarcely available to them. With the decline in prices of Photovoltaic solar energy, it became worthwhile for Raju to buy a PV unit, so we collected donations at school and a set of 2 PV collectors and a battery for storage of the electricity - so that electricity generated during the day could be consumed in the evening - were installed.

How to Cut Costs Strategically...

"What are you doing to contain or cut costs to get through 2009?"

I was a blind-copy recipient of this question in an email from a colleague the other day. It came with the promise that answers would be shared anonymously among those of us willing to throw our ideas into the conversation.

I'm tossing out a couple of thoughts. They're based on the experience I've had the last decade working with leaders to create and implement strategies for change, improvement and innovation -- which often has been shaped by the need to hang on for dear life.

5 Marketplace Implementation Lessons from a Corporate Strategy Execution Consultant with 25+ Years of Experience

The best-laid strategic plans often go awry once exposed to the light of day and the rudeness and ruthlessness of reality.

Former President Lyndon Johnson understood that. He often told a story of a man who had applied for a job as a flagman at a railroad crossing. The man was told he'd be handed the job if he could pass a test consisting of just a single question

Simplicity is often the key to a great invention, and that's at the core of this idea from a retired physics professor: Adaptive eye-glasses that are easily tweaked to suit the wearer.

Why Leadership Does not Require Charisma

You may need charisma to get elected to high office, but there is such a thing as small scale local leadership. For example, a technical expert could promote a new product idea to her colleagues by demonstrating how it works or by making a hard-hitting factual case for it. Our concept of leadership is totally distorted by our narrow focus on business and political leadership - what it means to get appointed to high office. Style is only a situational matter.

Leadership

Canada slides! - Global Gender Gap Report 2008

I was saddened to read that Canada has slid 13 places to number 31 out of 130 countries on 2008 the global "gender gap index." However, the US gains four places and for the first time is ahead of Canada. Norway holds the number one position, followed by Finland (2), Sweden (3) and Iceland (4).

The Power of Choice and Control

Decades ago, I learned a valuable lesson from the ‘special’ young children I worked with. These were kids from disenfranchised neighborhoods, who by seven years old were ‘labeled’, deemed difficult if not impossible, and in many cases discarded. The lesson I learned was the power of ‘Choice and Control’. Determined to make a difference, and reach these young folks, I improvised all the time. I was willing to try anything.

Observe, Discover, Intent, Produce

These four words, “observe, discover, intent, produce”, capture the essence of leading educators and business leaders who are lauded for their creative leadership. Peter Senge defined this process as characteristics for his U Model (presencing, sensing and realizing). Important to note is the critical attitude, skill and behavior is being present, for without that, you ‘seeing’ is always compromised by habitual ways of being and thinking.

The Evolving Social Network

Social Networking is constantly evolving, since its inception.

Many new ideas are evolving and many old ideas are being recycled. But, one thing is for sure. The Internet is littered with social networking sites. Why? Because the early adopters and many niche sites are making tons of money.

So, where is the trend headed and how can I capitlize on it?

Redefining leadership

It is time to define with more objectivity the leadership concept, something that today is quite diffuse. Can we call Leaders to those people or organizations that finally will leave indicated as responsible for the catastrophe that today shakes the world?.
