What Would These 12 Business Leaders Do Today?

In business today, there's too much focus on what is bad, what is threatening, who did what to whom.

Imagination and innovation are our greatest weapons. Lack of using them is the only thing strong enough to stop any of us from achieving our goals.

Factually, we can each get more done in less time if we simply take note on establishing WHERE we are going.

Kissinger said, "If you do not know where you are going, every road will get you nowhere."

When Great Design Becomes Its Own Language

I've never been very good at learning a language. I was terrible in high school Spanish and couldn't grasp it at all until I started traveling to Mexico and had to learn at least enough to get by or starve. I tried to take up French some years back when I was working on a project in Paris and could barely retain enough to order in a restaurant or ask for directions on the street. I've been going to China every year for the past ten and I can hardly get beyond "hi", "how are you", "goodbye" and "thanks." Learning languages and how to play the piano are my biggest failings in life.

The excitement in the tech world about Apple's rumored iTablet (iPad?) is getting close to fever pitch, culminating with an article in The New York Times today. But all the evidence suggests that the seeds of the iTablet were planted decades ago--so we've made a timeline for you.

Behind the Apple-Eminem Feud

We wrote about Eminem's dispute with Apple yesterday. Now we've learned that Eminem is seeking $16 million in damages from Apple for selling his tracks without proper authorization, according to court documents. But Eminem made money off those sales. So why is he really suing Apple?

Apple Gives iPod Nano Video Eyes, iPod Touch Stays Blind

Apple just announced its refreshed iPod line-up, and among the products came the long-rumored news that the iPod Nano would be getting a built-in video cam...but not the iPod Touch. It's a tad surprising, but still a clever move.

Is the Kindle Destined for SkyMall?

The hype around the iTablet is reaching a fever pitch with the Kindle increasingly looking like yet another example of Apple roadkill.
My Life With a Hackintosh--and How the Movement Suggests a New Model for Innovation

Not long ago, I got my hands on one of the slowest, ugliest, and least-user-friendly Macintosh laptops the world has ever seen -- and I love it. My Mac sports a couple of features that others can't match. First, it's tiny and lighter than Apple's vaunted MacBook Air. Even better, its portability doesn't carry a premium; it set me back only about $500, a third of what Apple charges for the Air.

Next week Wednesday is when Apple will host its traditional iPod media event. At least, that's what everyone's assuming from the "It's Only Rock'N'Roll, But We Like It" tagline Apple chose. As usual there's a bunch of swirling rumors, which we've summarized for you.

Now this is interesting: As well as an agreement with Google to avoid hiring staff from one another, Steve Jobs wanted the same from Palm. But Palm's CEO Ed Colligan turned him down flat . What's going on here?

The Internets are a-swirling this morning with speculation and rumor, all thanks to news that Apple called a keynote presentation for the week of September 7. "What's it for?" everyone's wondering.

Scrape away all of the wizardry, and the sixth Harry Potter film is about a company that unites behind a leader to defeat its foes. In short, who in the business world is equivalent to our cast of heroes and who deserves the title of He Who Must Not Be Named?

Amazon Taps Its Inner Apple

To explain the present and divine the future, Amazon's founder and prognosticator-in-chief, Jeff Bezos, often turns to the past. Fond of historical analogies, Bezos has compared the dotcom boom and bust to the 1849 gold rush, the advent of electricity to today's broadband-infused Web, the printed book to a horse, and the Kindle reader to a car. Perhaps his trippiest simile likens the impact of the Internet on business to the Cambrian period approximately 550 million years ago, after the first multicellular creatures crawled out of the primordial ooze.

On June 21, FastCompany.com reported on speculation that Apple's mercurial chief executive had undergone a liver transplant, as reported by the Wall Street Journal. Yesterday, the surgery was confirmed by the operating hospital, Methodist University Hospital in Memphis, Tennesse. Jobs approved the disclosure.

Did Steve Jobs Have A Liver Transplant?

According to MSNBC, Apple CEO Steve Jobs may have begun his current six-month hiatus from Apple in order to recover from a liver transplant he received in Tennessee. A survivor of pancreatic cancer, Jobs appeared increasingly thin in 2008, leading many to suspect that his health was in dire condition. At the time, Jobs dismissed his appearance as the result of a minor malfunction of digestion.

Creating Cults and Cultures With Design

I can't possibly write for a week about design without bringing up Apple. Has a single company outside of the fashion world consistently produced such an impressive collection of offerings that have been both successful and adored? This week's iPhone 3G S is no different. Their brand and products and software are beautiful, wonderful, delightful.

Jon Rubenstein just consolidated his management position at Palm--as of yesterday he's now the company's chairman and CEO. While this sounds like some dry business news, it may be revolutionary for Palm. Can Rubenstein turn Palm around, like he did Apple?
