U.S. computer makers and free speech advocates won a hefty victory over China's ruling party last month when the People's Republic backed down on a mandate that all computers in that country come packaged with a state-approved Web filtering software known as Green Dam. Now, schools in Beijing are quietly winning their own battle against information control, removing the Green Dam filter from school computers.

China is not relenting in its latest campaign against "vulgar" material on the Web. In its latest salvo against the free flow of information, the People's Republic has ordered Google to shut down its foreign Web site search and disabled the keyword suggestion function on google.cn, claiming the company isn't doing enough to restrict pornographic images and text from its search results. China threatened punishment for the search giant if it does not revamp its site to exclude indecent materials, though it's unclear what that punishment might be.

Beginning July 1, PC makers pushing their products in China will face an ethical challenge. That's when the Chinese government plans to require all PCs sold in the country to ship with software that blocks access to particular corners of the Web. Although the officials claim that pornography is the primary target of the censoring software, known officially as Green Dam-Youth Escort, the move could introduce unprecedented government control over what China's 250 million Web users can see.
