Even more interesting to me is the concept of asset based finance rather than debt based microcredit. It comes from a former City of London regulator whose ideas came long before the sub-prime crisis.

http://kiva.org is proabably the greatest concept ever thought of that uses the web to do good. People all over the world are helping others all over the world to start or grow their businesses by funding loans. Microcredit has been around for years and was the subject of the Nobel Peace Prize in 2006.
