Boston Lobster Company Survives

When I first heard about James Hook & Co. lobster business going up in flames I thought to myself “the owners probably torched it on purpose.” It’s expensive to be in the lobster business in New England these days. Not only are gas prices making it expensive to run the lobster boats, but it’s also caused the bait to shoot up in price as well. Here’s an interesting article on lobster boat builders.

Damn Laptop Hinge or Wow, Homemade Strawberry Rhubarb Compote is GOOOOD

So, since my last post....

My investor backed away from the investment after I reiterated my disinterest in dating anyone. including but not limited to someone investing money in my company. Frustrating. So, in the matter of a week I lost money and lost my web developer since I was no longer in a position to pay him. I faced utter despair until:

American Institute of Architects Convention and Design Expo

Most conventions are about talk, but the American Institute of Architects wants to "Walk the Walk." That's the theme of the campaign recently launched by the AIA to promote sustainable design, and accordingly, the AIA has greened its convention, which this year is in Boston. No more session handouts or "Hello, my name is..." name tags. Exhibitors are packing fewer samples, and leftover food is going to soup kitchens. The icing on this eco-friendly, design-rich cake: 75 architectural tours of "America's Walking City." -KR

Amiercan Institute of Architects Convention and Design Expo

This year's AIA Convention and Design Expo in Boston (May 15-17) will explore the essential role of the architect in society.

The power of architecture on behalf of all people underlies every aspect of the convention. The "We the People" program inspires responses on many scales of interest, from the role of the architect in the world as a shaper of policy to the voice of people who might otherwise not be represented. It is a program that makes allowances for new building types, materials, and methods, as well as the interaction of what we build with the natural cycle of our planet.

Narrowing it down.... or I have a cold and can't keep scouring the internet until 4am for solutions

So, I think I am between choosing AISO and The Greenest Host for my hosting needs post yahoo. The Greenest Host rents space from AISO and they are both 100% solar powered. I had been considering Dream Host but they offset rather than utilize clean energy from the get go. Plus .... Joomla had me about to stab myself in the eye. I just don't get it! I read the forums and even self declared geeks don't seem to get it. This amazes me since it was touted as being great for beginners and non programmers. Not quite.

I downloaded WAMP and Joomla (as well as a bucket full of other open source programs like wordpress, zen cart, etc ) and I seem to be up and running. Well, I seem to be leaning against the wall scratching my head with my sleeping dog on my feet.

Creating a green business... one paw at a time

Michele Martin and her holistically raised boxer Bella set out in 2007 to start a web based pet store that was the greenest around. From web hosting to the types of cleaners used in the home office... check in to see them struggle through sometimes painful choices such as choosing eco-packing peanuts or shredded waste paper as a packing material.
