AT&T is about to upgrade its cellphone network to 7.2 mega bits per second to support the tech in the new iPhone 3G S. But over in Portugal, where 7.2 mbps rates are already common, Vodafone's going for 21mbps.

Smart grid developer Trilliant announced that it purchased SkyPilot Networks yesterday in an attempt to future-proof the smart grid. SkyPilot, a broadband wireless company, delivers over 10-times the bandwidth of cellular networks at a lower cost. The company's long-range (over 10 miles) wireless mesh network add on to Trilliant's short-range SecureMesh networks that connect home smart meters and utilities.

Woe Am I, Without Mobile Broadband

As I write this, my computer's Wi-Fi antenna mopes among the pay-per-hour networks inside La Guardia Airport, wondering why it costs $8 to access the Internet for the short period before my flight. While it wanders, I fume.

Olidata's Conte has just been shown for the first time, and it looks like a serious competitor to the MacBook Air class of ultra-portables. Check it out: Skinny aluminum case, 13-inch screen, back-lit keyboard with chicklet-style keys, oh and built-in 3G broadband capability.

Sprint's Golden Hour Cometh

AT&T [ATT] and Verizon [VZ] are today's behemoths in the mobile service provider marketplace. But with its fast network, forward-thinking technology, and value-oriented plans, the next decade of cell users could all belong to the number-three carrier -- Sprint [S].

Toshiba’s Refreshed “Satellite” Packs WiMAX

Now that Sprint [S] has announced its big WiMAX launch in Baltimore, bunches of companies are scurrying to announce products that will incorporate the wireless broadband technology.
As of this week, the XOHM network in Baltimore (and a handful of other cities nationwide; the list is growing) will have a new notebook to welcome: the WiMAX-ready Toshiba [TOSBF] Satellite notebook.

Sprint Launches WiMax in Baltimore

It's been a long time coming, but Sprint Nextel [S] finally flipped the switch on its long-delayed WiMax hotspot in Baltimore today, as well as revealing its first WiMax devices, made by ZyXEL [TPE:2391] and Samsung [SEO:005930]. This represents the official launch of their high-speed mobile broadband XOHM service.

So far, so good. Testers reporting for the Baltimore Sun have reported driving around the city in vans with laptops and watching streaming video at six megabits per second, which is comparable to most hard-wired broadband services.
