Privatizing Gains and Socializing Losses

"Repealing Glass-Steagall was 'obnoxious' and a bipartisan 'absurdity'...

The end result of the repeal was you have 'taxpayers subsidizing risk-taking' on Wall Street...

'It's the most anti-capitalist thing I've ever heard of in my life.'

...Glass-Steagall wasn't regulation, 'it was common sense'..."

Driving Dramatic Progress through Touchstone Events

The original touchstone was basanite. It is a smooth, black
stone used to test the quality of gold and silver. It was rubbed across the
precious metal and the authenticity could be determined by the color of the
streak produced. The word touchstone now means anything that tests

"Job Losses Could Trigger Round 2 of Banking Crisis"

"The unemployment rate now stands at 10.2%, yet stocks are at a 2009 high. The bulls will tell you not to worry; the unemployment rate is a lagging indicator. True as that may be, Charlie Gasparino author of The Sellout, has a word of warning: the jobs data may be a leading indicator when it comes to the health of our banking system.

One of Gasparino's sources, Calyon Securities banking analyst Mike Mayo (who warned of the credit bubble before the crash) tells him, if unemployment rises to 11%, 'there could be an issue where we have round 2 of this crisis.'

Why?

A Website Conversion Rate is defined as the number of visitors or potential customer leads to your site that perform a desired action measured against the total number of visitors in within a specific timeframe (ex. 30-days).

Why Values Trump Rules and Regulation

Everywhere I travel, I hear the same refrains: "We need more regulation," or on the flip side, "If we hadn't deregulated, we wouldn't be in this financial mess."

It looks like the White House is of this mind-set. Citing Wall Street for helping to create a "culture of irresponsibility," President Obama wants to impose more rules on the financial industry by, among other things, creating a Consumer Financial Protection Agency.

Alesia Shute and Everything’s Okay: Another Story Inspiring Change

As some of you know, our client, Alesia Shute, was diagnosed with cancer when she was seven years old. At a time when most kids are learning to ride bikes, Alesia was overcoming obstacles that knock adults to their knees. As a child, she survived six major surgeries and several minor ones and endured years of pain and uncertainty. But Alesia didn’t want to tell a story that focused on the pain and struggles of her journey; she wanted to tell a story about overcoming, a story that would inspire other patients and survivors to live openly and joyfully.

by the Nobel Prize-winning economist Paul Krugman in which he described
the renewed battle between so-called freshwater economists (so named
because they are largely based at the University of Chicago and other
Midwestern universities) and saltwater economists (based primarily at
Princeton, MIT, Berkeley and other coastal universities). The

A fascinating new book, The Nature of Technology: What It Is and How It Evolves,
by the economist W. Brian Arthur, was just published that challenges
much of the conventional wisdom that we hold about the relationship
between science and technology. Most notably, the notion that science
is the horse to technology’s cart; in other words, scientific
advancement results in technological innovation.

Work/Life Balance: Part II

In my September post, I introduced you to my perspective on work/life balance: what it is,
the causes of work/life imbalance, and the basic process for how you
can create better balance in your work and personal lives. This post will focus on specific and practical strategies you can use to actually
Are You Measuring the Wrong Things?

Elizabeth Warren, chair of the Congressional Oversight Panel for bank bailouts

"The numbers are bleak -- unemployment has surpassed 10 percent for the first time since 1983 -- and Warren is not surprised.

'Let's face it,' Warren said, 'This is sort of how we went about the rescue -- we rescued at the top and we left the bottom to kind of fend for itself -- and that's showing up in the unemployment numbers.'

Warren went on to explain that the report is really about the guarantees the Government made to protect banks' assets while leaving the public out to dry.
