A few weeks ago after watching another dismal day of stock market losses with a retrenching S+P and declining Dow my thoughts turned to the adage I heard my first summer on the trading desk from both veteran floor traders and investment bankers alike, "Sell in May and Go away!"

So as a tenured financier I fell back on habit and stood on ceremony and decided to do what financiers do in the summer season: Head to the Hamptons (for a fundraiser)!

As I observed the waning rally this morning, I reflected on what brought us to this situation in the first place: the fundamental shut down of our credit markets and leverage system. This has created a scarcity effect for capital (I say effect because the money is still out there but it is currently frozen with fear). Leverage is a critical component for a sustained rally in the equity markets. In order for the stock market to rise there will have to be a viable credit market -- the stock market will not be able to decouple and move forward on it’s own. Period.

Pictured here is none other than Thomas H. Lee is an financier and investor par excellence and is credited with being one of the early pioneers in private equity and specifically leveraged buyouts. Thomas H. Lee partners is the firm he founded in 1974, is among the oldest and largest PE firms globally.

One of Tom's early successes was the acquisition of Sterling Jewelers for $28 million. he supposedly put in less than $3 million and when the company was sold two years later for $210 million walked away with over $180 million in profits.

Dr. B taught at Columbia but returned to The University of Chicago. Dr. Becker holds joint appointments with the departments of Economics and Sociology, and the Booth School of Business(formerly GSB). Dr. Becker won the John Bates Clark medal and won a laureate for the Nobel prize in Economics in 1992, and he also received the United States' Presidential medal of Freedom in 2007.

The FOMC released their expectations based on their findings, needless to say the results weren’t good. The report had a negative outlook that was based on deflation expectations, lower payroll, decreased bank lending and reduced foreign activity. I could have saved them the time, effort and energy and told them that in March.
